Duffy grew up in Glasglow Scotland until the age of 6, where she moved to England. She grew up in a strictly Catholic family, attending convent schools throughout her schooling years. Her family was considered to be on the poor side of the income scale. Yet, she began writing poetry at a very young age, it even being published in a magazine at just 14 years old. Post-graduating, Duffy went on to publish many of her books and travel to read/teach poetry. She became a professor of contemporary poetry and was appointed Poet Laureate.
