The people of Crimea currently feel like they are not represented in their nation as Ukraine claims the area despite the fact that the majority of the people there are Russian. But while they are not apart of Russia, Crimea is made of two autonomous republics of Sevastopol and Crimea, which have more freedom from the Ukrainian government.

At the current moment, the odds of Crimea joining Russia are low. Most of the world, including the US, UK, and France, do not recognize this claim along with 74 other nations. Other nations such as Bolivia, North Korea, and Venezuela recognize the Russian claim of Crimea. Due to the annexation as well, sanctions have been placed on Russia putting pressure on them to give Crimea back to Ukraine.

The quest for a nation state started back in 1783 when Russia took control of the Crimean peninsula. In 1954, during the Soviet Union, Russia gave Ukraine control of the Crimean peninsula. When the dissolution of the Soviet Union happened in 1991, a referendum happened for Ukrainian independence. The people voted very slightly for Ukrainian independence but also voted for Crimea to be autonomous. In 1992 the people of Crimea had another referendum but was suppressed by the Ukrainian military. After the Ukrainian revolution in 2014, separatists and the Russian military invaded and occupied Crimea and had a referendum which supported Ukrainian independence.
