In 1954, during the Soviet Union, Russia gave Ukraine control of the Crimean peninsula. When the dissolution of the Soviet Union happened in 1991, a referendum happened for Ukrainian independence. The people voted very slightly for Ukrainian independence but also voted for Crimea to be autonomous. In 1992 the people of Crimea had another referendum but was suppressed by the Ukrainian military.
