Life for Fadi has been near and close to miserable. He lost his sister, fled from his home country, and 9-11 has just happened. Fadi recently escaped/moved to San Francisco to escape from the terrible Taliban in his home country, Afghanistan. To escape Afghanistan, Fadi’s father, Habib, arranged for a truck to drive them to a neighboring country, Pakistan. While running to the escape truck a mob of frantic people appeared. His sister was sadly swallowed up by this sea of people and became lost. After this Fadi blamed himself for losing his sister, and a little part of him seemed to slumber. Now Fadi deals with living in a new country without his beloved sister.

I think the theme in the book Shooting Kubal is that everything happens for a reason. For example, our cool God lined it up for Fadi to find his sister in a way he had never imagined! Fadi lost a competition that would have allowed him to go on a trip to India to find his sister Marium. He lost this competition, but still decided to go on a field trip to the Société Géographique. While he was there, he met a man by the name of Clive Murray. Clive had recently visited the Packistan-Afghan border, and had accidentally found Marium. Marium had a doll named Gulminia who was completely distinguishable in a picture Clive Murray had taken. It says “No one had to fly to Peshawar to get Mariam. With Clive Murray’s help she was tracked down to the refugee camp where he’d taken the picture.” (senzai 252)

When Marium was found and had come back, Fadi and her relationship was even stronger than before. It says “His fingers crept across the soft carpet floor, behind Gulmina’s back. He folded Marium’s hand and squeezed, Marium glanced back at him and grinned, then launched back into her story.“ (Senzai 253) This to me just shows how good our Father is, even those who do not believe in him he is good to. He brought Marium back to them in a way Fadi nor any of them had imagined. They thought they would have to save up and fly to Pakistan and track her down, but He arranged it so that she would be brought back to them. That is just how good and cool He is. So this to me shows that everything happens for a reason, he lost the competition, found a man who took a picture of Mariums doll, got Marium back and in the end won.

Section 2 Compare Contrast

When thinking about similarities and differences between me and Fadi there are two key details that stick out. One similarity between the two of us is that we both love our family very much. For example Fadi, although wrong, tried to sneak aboard two planes to fly halfway around the world to find and save his beloved sister. Although he found no success in his endeavors, the effort was still there and showed. When it comes to me and my family, I am ready to die for them. Whether it is just sicking up for them in street ball, or having to actually fight for them I am ready. This is one of the correlations between the two of us teenagers.

In thinking about differences between Fadi and I, the main and key detail is our faiths. I am Christian and a son of the living God, and believe that Jesus Christ was both fully man and fully God and died for us. I try to live this out every day. On the other hand Fadi is Muslim and belives that Jesus was only mearly a prophet. Fadi believes that a prophet named Muhamed had visions from God, and believes that Muhamed was the last prophet I think. Now this is a major problem, even though it may seem similar, because in Christianity we believe that Jesus was the son of God and paid the debt for our sins by dying on the cross, and rose again three days later for our justification. This is the only way for salvation. But for Fadi and Muslims they believe that Jesus was only a prophet and now you can see why this is such a difference.

Many more similarities and differences could be that we have both have lived in forign land. Fadi, although born in the U.S.A, spent the majority of his life in Afghanistan I believe. I once lived in Germany for about three years because the Army sent my dad there. We both know what it can be like moving and getting used to a new place, making friends and things like that. A major difference between our two moves was that when they were moving they were escaping a country and terrorists. It says here “The Taliban were in hot pursuit,” (Senizai 27) When I moved it was nothing like that, I wasn’t being chased by terrorists that I know of. I was blessed to have been going to a country that had excellent candy. In summary though, there is one gigantic similarity and difference between the two of us, we both love our family, and I serve the true God as Fadi does not.

An item that I feel represents Shooting Kubal is Marium's doll, Gulmina. Gulmina is a Barbie doll that has a broken hand, bumps and bruises, but is still Mariums doll, and I feel is even her favorite toy. I feel that this represents the novel because it shows that the family has struggles and pains, but they are still there. They may be down, but not out. The scars and dirt show use, story, joys, and pains. Gulminia is a representation of a story, not just one story, but two. Before Gulmina was Mariums doll, she was Noors doll and I would even guess Noors favorite as well. When Noor became too old for the doll, she gave it to her younger sister as a gift, and I would like to think Marium would one day give Gulminia away, perhaps to her future daughter, or someone who would enjoy this rugged and used doll. That is why I think Gulmina is an awesome representation of Shooting Kubal.

“She’d inherited Gulmina from Noor when her older sister had outgrown it. And now, even though the doll's features had faded and she was missing her left hand, Gulmina acompened Marium.” (Senzai 6-7)

Conclusion (Author's Purpose)

I think that one of the reasons the author wrote this story was to show the difficulty that the Afghan people face, especially refugees. This story shows the hardships in Afghanistan, and how difficult it can be to escape and live in America post 9/11. For example, in the beginning of the book Fadi and his family were living under the oppressive cult of the Taliban. It says here “They all know who she meant--them, the Taliban.” (Senzai 9) This short passage shows the terror that the Taliban inflict. Their struggles didn’t end in Afghanistan, once Fadi and his family got to America, part of their hearts were still left in Afghanistan because their daughter and sister was lost. Eventually Marium was located and they were reunited by the hand of The good Lord. This is just one part of a struggle that refugees can face. This is why when we see anybody struggling, we should offer help and show these people the love of Christ.
