https://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/judaism/holydays/hanukkah.shtml
https://www.history.com/topics/religion/judaism
Obviously the most famous tradition is lighting the menorah: The menorah was a seven-branched candelabra that lit the ancient Temple in Jerusalem. It was lit only by specially, ritually-pure olive oil — olive oil that took more than a week to prepare. As legend has it, after the Maccabees drove the Greeks and their idols from the Temple, they cleaned and rededicated the space and managed to find but one cruse of this special oil, an amount that would traditionally have lit the menorah for just one day. But, miraculously, this one small jar of oil burned for eight whole days, allowing the menorah to remain alight until new oil could be prepared. Popular foods on Hanukkah: Potato pancakes and deep-fried doughnuts are traditional Hanukkah treats.Fried food in particular reminds Jews of the miracle of the oil and the candles that burned for eight days after the Maccabees won back the temple in Jerusalem.Dairy products are often eaten during Hanukkah. The tradition has its roots in the story of Judith (Yehudit) who saved her village from the Syrians by making an offering of cheese and wine to the governor of the enemy troops. The dreidel is a spinning top that has 4 sides. You play the game with choclate coins or pennies, anything really. At the start of each round each player puts a coin in the pot and takes it in turns to spin the dreidel. The letter on which the dreidel stops determines each player's score. The person who has all the money at the wins.

Christmas itself became magnified in the late 19th century when it became a national holiday in America. The Jewish custom shifted in imitation of Christmas, as the Christian holiday’s consumerism grew.

The trend of exchanging Hanukkah gifts really took off in the 1950s. At this time, Jewish child psychologists as well as rabbis started promoting gifts as a way to make post-Holocaust Jewish kids happy to be Jewish, rather than sad about missing out on Christmas.

Gifts:-Hanukkah gelt (Yiddish for money, though now usually used to mean chocolate coins): “Hanukkah gelt is an old custom, well attested in Europe. The most common game uses a dreidel and is a popular way of helping children to remember the great miracle. A dreidel is a spinning top with a different Hebrew letter inscribed on each of its four sides. The stakes are usually chocolate coins but sometimes pennies, peanuts or raisins are also used. Each player puts a coin in the pot and takes it in turns to spin the dreidel. The letter on which the dreidel stops determines each player's score.Other games include trying to knock other players' dreidels down and trying to spin as many dreidels as possible at any one time.

This agreement is also known as covenant. People in this religion are thanking their God for looking after the throughout their lives. Similar to Christianity, Jews believe in a man called Moses and Abraham. Abraham is a Hebrew man believed to have the first ’agreement’ with God. Moses is a man who saved the Jewish people from persecution in Egypt when he led them to safety across the Red Sea. He is also known to be the founder of Judaism. Their holy book is called Torah which is written in Hebrew. It is believed to be so special that people are not allowed to touch it. It is kept in a safe place called an ark in the Jewish temple. If people want to read it, they must use a special pointer stick called the yad. Jews worship their God in a building called synagogue where the services are held by rabbis which means ’teacher’ in Hebrew. Both boys and girl take place in a ceremony called Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah which are basically their first step on the way of growing up.

Natali Strahl
