In 1542, a new law was passed stating that witchcraft was now a crime. Following a more strict one in 1563 and then an even worse one in 1604.
Witches were identified in court by so-called "witch marks" that are said to be placed on witches by the devil or demonic creatures that the witches have (ex. cats). The most unexpected test was throwing the witch into a lake, if they sank then they were not a witch, if she floated then they were a witch.

He was very convinced that witches were making an attempt to drown him with a storm. King James even sent them to court for it.
Witchcraft became a huge part of his life when he decided to write an entire book on it. Following this, he made witchcraft punishable by death including a series of tests to ensure they were witches.
