This relates to many of the resources we explored in this Pear Deck as Covid19, income inequality and people of color representing themselves and solving problems in their own communities was a common theme that has ties to this government initiative. Seeing as it is a government led initiative however, there may be a mistrust of the handling of the funds by local communities. There may also be a lack of self-determination for each individual community as there may be strict terms associate with receiving relief funds.

https://www.baltimorecountymd.gov/departments/economicdev/covid19-assistance/

This is seen reported on in many of the resources on the PearDeck. The Baltimore City Mayor, Mayor Brandon M. Scott, lists ending gun violence as one of his top priorities. We could explore how gun violence differs between Baltimore and the surrounding counties. See if Baltimore has more gun violence or if its just reported on more often. Comparing the different ways that gun violence is reported. There are a lot of different ways that this topic could go and it might be too large to cover in just one project, but I believe it is an important issue in our community.

Building between Schools and Families

This is directly drawing from some of the experiences and problems that I know some of my students and their families face. I know there is an incredible amount of strain being placed on educators and administrators during this time, but I feel that focus needs to be on building relationships and support between schools and families. Schools are already over taxed but a lot more effort needs to be placed within schools and by those supporting schools on ensuring students and their families have the environment (food, shelter, water, safety, etc) to be able to learn. Otherwise, we continue to do a disservice to them.
-Megan

I know someone else has put this on here, but I have run into a few moments that have flabberghasted me. Schools are trying to stay in contact with students and provide resources, but when looking at students' priorities, if they don't have a stable shelter, food, warmth (think Maslow's hierarchy), their ability to concentrate and attend class (especially if forced to have their cameras on) will (and has) pushed students out.
https://www.wbaltv.com/article/baltimore-county-school-support-network-passes-out-boxes-of-food-to-families-in-need/32347396

The mayor has implemented a plan for the residents of Baltimore to receive a vaccination for COVID-19. Elderly residents are considered first, first responders/healthcare personnel, and some teachers have even began distributing some vaccinations. There have been talks of mass distributing for everyone to receive a vaccination. Students should be prioritized as the process of safely reopening schools should put everyone at as minimal of a risk as possible.
