The New Republic Opposes Racialized Quotas (1924)

Editors of the New Republic object what they thought to be the "psuedo - scientific) premise of Anglo - Saxon lead driving the Johnson Bill. The adoption of the 1890 census as the foundation of the quota is accepted by most as discrimination against certain nationalities-Italians, Greeks,
Armenians, Czechs, Poles, and Russians,,so, Russian and Polish Jews. The people of the bill deny that they put the idea of certain races being inferior. The editors had hoped that the bill wouldn't pass. They would rather extend the quota law that was present at the time so that we would be a more "homogeneous" nation.

In the Muller Case the validity of an Oregon statute, forbidding the employment of any female in certain industries more than ten hours during any one day was upheld. The decision proceeded upon the theory that the difference between the sexes may justify a different rule respecting hours of labor in the case of women than in the case of men. It is pointed out that these consist in differences of physical structure,
especially in respect of the maternal functions, and also in the fact that historically
woman has always been dependent upon man, who has established his
control by superior physical strength
