Are most methods for this trial and error, or have you had something be consistently successful?

Do you allow students the time to take a second and relax for a minute before the expectation of coming back together on task? For our 2 large mastery papers the students have written, he is one of the top performers out of all classes, but he refuses to do anything from the day to day classes.
