Because of weak water circulation and high organic activity, oxygen gets used up faster than it can be replaced. This makes survival challenging for most marine species, except for some special microorganisms that have adapted to live in such harsh conditions.

Scientists are studying this unique zone to understand how climate change and ocean currents affect oxygen levels and marine life across the world.

Covering an area nearly the size of Scotland, this massive region in the Gulf of Oman has such low oxygen levels that most marine life cannot survive there.

About 5.9 million years ago, the Mediterranean Sea nearly disappeared during an event called the Messinian Salinity Crisis. Due to tectonic movements, the connection between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar was cut off, causing the sea to almost completely dry up. Over thousands of years, the basin became a vast salt desert, with massive salt deposits forming beneath the surface.

Then, around 5.3 million years ago, the Atlantic Ocean broke through the barrier again in a dramatic event known as the Zanclean Flood. This flood refilled the Mediterranean basin in a relatively short geological time, possibly just a few months or years. The incoming water likely created enormous waterfalls—much taller than Niagara Falls—reshaping the landscape and restoring the Mediterranean Sea to what we know today.

Ishaal Babar

Abeer Fatima

Minahil Zahra

Masooma Hamza

Marfia Naeem

Haram Fatima

Mariyam Chaudhary
