Holden gets kicked out of Pency

In "The catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger , Holden starts off by talking about how he got kicked out of his prep school Pencey and recounts his last moments there before he decides to leave. He describes his feelings before he leaves Pencey like how he says "It made me too sad and lonesome" (28) , and "I was sort of crying. I don't know why"(29). In this instance in the book Holden faces the books theme of alienation and isolation. Before he leaves the Pencey building he starts to feel a mix of feelings of lonliness and alienation despite former criticisms he made about Pencey. He is being pushed to another place and feels like he doesn't really belong there and feels emotionally lost. The author creates Holden to be this way because he wants to show how Holden despite the way he acts is actually emotionally vulnerable. J.D. Salinger is trying to send the message of how hard it can be living in a world that can feel alienating

She starts a conversation with Holden after she notices a Pencey sticker on his luggage and Holden starts a series of lies like how he says his name is "Rudolf Schmidt" (71) and how he describes her son "He adapts himself very well to things" (71). This event reveals Holdens tendency to lie in order to create comforting illusions, During the part of the book Holden demonstrates the book's theme of The search for meaning and belonging as Holden creates a false identity and a series of lies in order to feel a sense of belonging.

In "Catcher in the Rye" bu J.D. Salinger Holden encounters Maurice (a pimp) at in elevator on his way to his hotel room who offers Holden a prostitute. Holden ends u just having a conversation with the prostitute and says things like "it sounded like a real kid"( 123) and "It made me feel sad as hell -- I don't know exactly why" ( 125). This event is significant as it represents the loss of innocence which is one of the books main ideas and Holden's dream of saving the innocence of children as sunny the prostitute was young and lost in the adult world. This moment in the book connects to the theme of Coming of Age as it shows Holden's fear of growing up by showing how he failed to do an adult thing. J.D. is trying to show the sad reality of how some children lose their innocence in adult society in the real world. And creates Holden to be this empathetic character that seeks to save innocence of children in order to show a deeper side of Holden for who he truly is.

Holden visits Phoebe at his old house

In the "Catcher in the Rye" by J.D Salinger, Holden goes over to his old house where his little sister phoebe lives and sneaks into her room to pay her a visit. They catch up on things that happened in their life then it turns into what they would like to do in the future and Holden talks about how "I'd just like to be the catcher in the rye and all"(225) and "I have to catch everybody if they start going over the cliff"(224). This moment demonstrated the theme of the search for meaning and belonging as Holden has found a meaning in life for something that he wants to do which is saving children's innocence. This event is significant in the story because it shows a place in time where Holden doesn't feel isolated and is truly happy and is able to reveal a different side of him where he can truly express his feelings. The author creates Holden to be like this to show that Holden is able to open up to people instead of only being sarcastic and a frequent liar. This is important because Holden is able to find identity and starts healing from his problems.
