Het water voor de fontein is afkomstig van een bron die net als de zeenimf Aretusa heet. Deze bron ligt in de bergen, en om de fontein te bereiken moet het water van de bron onder de zee door. Net als de zeenimf in de legende, die vertelt dat Aretusa in het water van Alfeo (een riviergod) zou hebben gebaad. Alfeo was stiekem verliefd op Aretusa en wilde haar dan ook in zijn netten strikken. Daar voelde Aretusa niets voor; ze vluchtte, onder de zee door, naar Ortygia. Hier veranderde Diana haar in een zoetwaterbron, waarin Alfeo zich mocht uitstorten…
