When I was a little boy (let’s say I was about 7 years old), I had some Beets, and that day I got a really bad stomach ache. Since then I haven’t had any Beets at all— just smelling them or thinking about eating them still makes me feel nauseated. I have to say it’s a really strong conditioning because it occurred after just a single trial, and I still feel nauseated and sick when I see or smell Beets even after 35 years of first trying them.

Learning the skills of everyday life can be hard, but they can be helped with application of a little operant conditioning. My children loves stickers the brighter and shinier they are the better. The application of operant conditioning with stickers and charts was used to tackle everything we could think of from personal hygiene to playing nicely with each child but not all at the same time!

Positive reinforcement is giving something pleasant after a behavior. This increases the probability that the behavior will continue, like having a job and going to work every day to receive a paycheck or

receiving praise after a musical performance would increase the amount that you perform, or a teacher complimenting students when they answer correctly will increase that behavior, at the gym, customers receive a discount if they work out a certain number of times and eat healthy. Negative reinforcement is taking away something unpleasant as a result of the behavior that is acceptable. This is also meant to increase the behavior as so, a teacher exempts student from the final test if they have perfect attendance. So, the teacher is taking away something unpleasant to increase behavior, or at a store, a child throws a tantrum because he did not get the candy they wanted. Dad finally gets him one. He stops the tantrum so he took away something unpleasant and Dad’s behavior of getting candy will increase. Positive punishment is used to decrease a behavior and is presenting something unpleasant after the behavior. A child gets a spanking when he puts his hand in the cookie jar. Negative punishment is also used to decrease a behavior and is removing something pleasant after the behavior. A family has a "curse jar." Every time someone curses, they have to put a dollar in the jar. This is taking away money, which is something pleasant, and reduces the behavior of swearing.
