Anna enters the car with her family. Anna realizes how grateful she is for not only her family, but having a car, and house, she also realizes how big her house is compared to others as well as how much more she has. She thinks her friends are very materialistic, always wanting new things and buying new things like a Ford Mustang and clothes. Again, she realizes this is not what she wants and she starts becoming grateful for what she has. Then Anna thinks about Ricardo, Italy, the Rossi family, and Patrizia. Later she got a message from Ricardo.

On page 42, it starts with Ricardo saying that Patricia is doing well and is studying English in school, in order for her to be able to speak when she visits California. Then, Anna says that she is happy for her friends and the Rossi family back in Italy and hopes they are well. Then Ricardo tells her that he has a serious and useful English lesson which Anna replies with that it is not necessary to take. However, he wants to be able to speak when he visits her. Then Ricardo asked when Anna will be returning. In Anna's last text she says that she is sad because she will not be returning to Italy. Anna feels happy when she reads his messages because he is a good person and she likes to get updates on her friends back in Italy. She is happy that Patrizia wants to come and visit her.

Page 40: Riccardo asks Anna how she is doing, how her family is doing, and how her school is. Anna starts off by saying how she is very happy to be receiving messages from Riccardo. Anna tells him that she is doing well, and her family is doing well. Anna enjoys Italian class, and receives compliments from her teacher saying her Italian is very good. Anna also talks a lot about her experience in Italy.

Page 41: Riccardo responds by telling Anna that he is doing good as well. He tells her he goes to school every day, and that his lessons are on Italian, math, science, and history. He says he likes learning about the United States, and that it's very interesting. Anna says she's happy for him, and asks how Graziella and Giovanna are. Riccardo responds by saying they are well, and that they go to school every day too. He says that they enjoy the lessons, but he gets bored. Anna ends the chapter by asking how is Patrizia.
