3 Main Points:

1- Actors are not usually surveyed/interviewed afterwards for their feedback. Actors and students, along with educators should have a debriefing period afterwards to discuss what worked, and what didn't work, in order to create more of an authentic scenario.
2- Most schools of rural areas don't have the funds for professional actors, which schools in bigger cities might have easier access to. This creates a disadvantage for those in rural areas/smaller schools.
3- When students were asked 2-6 years later whether the simulation prepared them their response was an overwhelmingly "yes."

Advantages of Simulation

Simulation provides great practice before having to apply skills in real life.
You usually have an expert that can identify areas of improvement.
Group simulation can ease some students' fears, making it easier for them to perform well.
Simulation can provide opportunities that might not always be available in clinical settings, such as simulation of a live birth. Additionally, mothers might not always want students in the room, and at times students are usually on the sideline and not always allowed to participate.

Disadvantages of simulation

Simulations have limits in the sense that a real human in a real-life scenario is more complex.
Simulations are usually done in groups, not every individual participates and uses their teammates as crutches.
Not all schools provide the same type of simulation learning. Software, technology, and levels of difficulty vary depending on the school or professor.
Not every student performs well when observed by their peers.
Simulations can be a lot easier than in real life. Such as when doing IV therapy on simulations, veins are much easier to visualize than a human.

Two Mobile Device Simulation Apps

1. Full Code- Emergency Medicine
The app has over 80 scenarios, and they add 2 new scenarios monthly covering current topics such as coronavirus. A student takes patient history, assesses, orders labs, it even includes interdisciplinary consultations. At the end you receive a score and this can guide you with the areas that need improvement.

2.Nursing Sim
This teaches students how to understand the process of nurse assignments. It shows a student how using nursing competency and patient acuity is used to determine which patients are assigned to which nurse. Delegation is an important task not usually learned during clinicals.

Advantages:

Free of charge
Offers many layouts to create presentations, along with providing some backgrounds to get you started.
An abundant amount of features can be added to the presentation such as personal uploads, gifs, audio, among others.

Disadvantages:

Only 3 Padlet projects are free.
Cant arrange the posts (my stickies) in the preferred order, as it leaves gaps in between.
Not many font choices to choose from.
In the text, I made them to look like stickies, but they're not able to be expanded. Instead, they're kept in long, vertical form
The titles in each post cannot be formatted.
There are limited font options, and unable to change font type or the color of font.
Unable to underline text.
