The way phones are built continue changing to try to keep up with new needs. People want bigger screens to see better, but they don't want the phone to feel like a brick so they want it to be thin. Which leaves less room for the battery and makes it easier to break. The battery has to be small enough to fit in the phone but big enough to power the new motherboard and software.

The main problem with phone lifespan is how they are built. Most new phones are the built the same as old ones. The same materials are used, the only difference is different features are added. Using stronger materials would help lengthen the lifespan of the phone. Eventually the phone will still break, but with better materials it could be recycled and used to make a new one. Reusing materials could help bring down production cost and then lower the overall cost of the phone. If the lifespan of the phone is increased, it will also make the investment better because it wouldn't be something that would need replaced after only a few short years.

If the phones are made of more recyclable materials then when a phone breaks, the materials could be reused in new phones.

Anick Jesdanun explains in his article that developers are in a constant battle between making phones that meet the desires of the consumer, but also that can stand up to the wear and tear of daily use. Instead of trying to edit the original design of the phone, an edit of the construction of the phone is needed. Functionality and performance should be the priority. Making the phones slimmer may appeal to consumers, but hinders the options developers have on improvements. By changing the construcion of the phone, developers may have the ability to make the necessary changes to improve the construction strength of the phone.
