I watched this film for the first time and I can say that I would definitely like to watch it again. The atmosphere of the book is quite vividly conveyed in the film: bright, pompous parties at the Gatsby‘s mansion, garments of characters, a vulgar hotel and the ugly valley of ashes

In my view, the actors are chosen very accurately. The actress playing the role of Daisy perfectly conveys the unpleasant character of the heroine. The only thing that surprised me about the actors was the one who played Mr. Wilson. I imagined him completely different: a stout, bearded, exhausted man.

The way of how Nick writes the book seemed to me a fascinating idea, but it felt like the emphasis in the film was more on the glittering roaring 20’s; as if the emotions of the characters were not fully disclosed. However, the episode in Gatsby's house with the scattering of his shirts, despite all its cheerful component, seemed to me very touching and upsetting. At that moment, knowing the ending of the book, I realized that this would never happen again in their life.

The film adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" was beyond my expectations because of the motion picture collage technique used for the plot reveal. It implies the fragmented memories popping up so fast and vanishing away again so precisely. I’ve never seen something as interesting before, as using the modern music for the unfolding the mood of the Roaring Twenties as well. It has never come across my mind. Although, I don’t quite understand the trope of the flourishing alcoholism of Nick Carraway, but everyone does understand the meaning of artistic liberties – that’s why I am not to judge. Ten out of ten for Lana Del Rey’s composition used in the soundtrack, too! It seemed so passionate and full of dramatic vibe.

I think I got too attached to the images of the characters from the book that I came up with in my head. That's why I didn't really like the cast and their acting, even though they are all very talented in their own way.

Of course the picture is splendid: the chic interior of Mr. Gatsby's house and the one of the Buchanan's, the neat exterior of Nick's house, perfectly matched details, actors' clothes and fashion details of that time. Especially selection and combination of colors and music!

I think it would have been better to reduce the amount of vulgarity in some scenes (an evening in an apartment in New York with Tom and Myrtle, a meeting with Mr. Wolfsheim in a restaurant, for example) and save time (and the budget of the film, ha-ha).

I wanted to see more psychology in the dialogues and behavior of the characters. Perhaps I didn't quite catch it because of the hyperbolization, I don't know, it's so, just a personal remark :)

For example, I was very touched by the last dialogue between Nick and Mr. Gatsby on the day of his death, when Nick thanked Gatsby for breakfast and said to him encouragingly, "You're worth the whole damn bunch put together." I literally cried after these words, because I understood (and knew) that this was their last meeting. But, unfortunately, in the film, this scene turned out to be quite crumpled and could not convey the full depth of Nick's words.

in general, I would rate the film 7/10, but I would not recommend it for watching. I have watched it in a grudging way actually :) Because I'm always in favor of reading a book rather than watching a movie. I practically don't watch movies based on the books I have read, so as not to be disappointed (even though I never repose trust in such things) and not to spoil my impression.

P.S: I think I have watched the movie with about the same expression on my face as Jordan Backer has there :)

Very often people talk about expectations and impressions in a negative light: reality falls short of the ideal picture that they imagined (does it ring any bells?))). But it is not necessarily so. Sometimes we are lucky, and reality exceeds expectations, sometimes reality is just different, neither better nor worse.
And sometimes it’s impossible to say exactly what your impressions are, because art consists of thousands of details, some of which you liked less, some more. This is what happened in my head after watching the 2013 film "The Great Gatsby" by Baz Luhrmann.
I have not watched the film before, but I have seen several episodes from the Russian version (and a huge number of memes, of course). And here's the first thing I want to talk about - voice acting!
In the Russian translation, Leonardo DiCaprio is always voiced by the famous russian actor Sergei Burunov. It turned out that Sergei owns the voice of DiCaprio better than DiCaprio himself. The well-known (and magnificent) moment where Gatsby holds out a glass in front of him sounds much more epic in the Russian version than in the English one (thanks to Sergey for his skill).
But I don't want to offend Leonardo in any way! On the contrary, he jumped above my expectations. After reading the book, I thought that playing Gatsby is too difficult: you need to remember every second that this person has dozens of emotions in his soul at the same time.
But, as for me, Leonardo DiCaprio deserved his long-awaited Oscar! In the film, Gatsby is both melancholy, and perky, and sweet, and suffering, and extraordinary, and, most importantly, Great.
Reality did not fall short of my expectations this time.
Alina D.

It's probably the best movie I've ever watched. Leonardo DiCaprio's acting is excellent as always, Isla Fisher is also incomparable (the actress of my favorite movie as a child "Confessions of a Shopaholic")) Everything is beautifully done in the film: from the scenery in Gatsby's house and the right music at parties, ending with the death of Myrtle. I watched this movie for the third time (before that I watched it in Russian of course)) The only thing I didn't like was the actress chosen for the role of Daisy. Absolutely no character, ugly, stupid, and for this Gatsby has been waiting for her almost all his life? Seriously? But still, no matter what, this is the kind of film that you want to review and revise, even if you remember all the actions, because the details delight.

Sonya L.

I followed in the footsteps of Nick. At first I heard something about Gatsby, then read something and finally saw him. Mainly the film met my expectations. It transpired to be a well done summary of the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald with many quotes and perfectly detalised scenes from the novel, one of which is when Nick sees Daisy lying on a couch for the first time, and White curtains flutter in the room. But there're things which I didn't expect to see and which embarrassed me a little. For example, the way of Nick's notes interpretation. As far as I remember, the book is just a kind of a collection of Nick's thoughts and memories, it tells us nothing about a receiver of this handwriting. However, I find the solution with a psychiatrist great, it's naturally embaded in the whole idea. The second thing what confused me is the cast. I didn't expect the characters to look (not behave!) like they occur in the film. The most shocking appearances for me are Meyer Wolfsheim, Tom Buchanan and Daisy. In my imagination they have (or now, had) other faces. Because of the media, I was ready to see Nick and Gatsby played by Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio. Still I do like their acting, but, again, it doesn't correspond to my imagination and, moreover, it evokes different feelings in contrast to the novel itself.

Fun fact: I like Nick played by Macguayer, he looks so funny innocent and kind.

In general the film provides us with a magnificent view of the roaring 20s. Nevertheless, some things ruin this wonder of cinematography. Even though I like the music of the 21st century, it makes me fall out of the atmosphere of luxury parties, women's sparkling dresses and men's tuxedos.

However, I liked "The Great Gatsby" produced by Baz Luhrmann and I'm totally happy about the fact that only after I had read the book I watched the screen version.

Elizaveta Tashbulatova

I watched the film «The Great Gatsby» for the second time. I can say that after having read the book «The Great Gatsby», this film takes on a new meaning. I started to notice some details that I haven`t observed before.
Firstly, the film crew has managed to immerse us into the atmosphere of the USA of the 20s. That`s why you want to enjoy an incredible and awe-inspiring picture more and more. The decorations of the parties, the costumes of all characters, their houses and apartments literally blow my mind. It looks incredibly stylish but also too grotesquely. The pomposity distracts people from problems that they don`t want to solve or even notice.
Secondly, this moving love story was well acted out in the film. At the end I had the same mixed feelings as after the book. Especially, during the scene of Gatsby`s death you don`t want to accept the fact that his life is over. You have feeling of emptiness and loneliness again. And of course, I want to stand out the actors. Leonardo DiCaprio is wonderful in any film, but here he won my heart again. Tobey Maguire being Nick played his role magnificent with the part of irony and also seriousness. Over time, I want to rewatch the film because it left a mark on my soul.
Gorlanova Karolina.

It is very exciting after reading the book to watch a movie based on it. Speaking of my impressions, the film exceeded all expectations. The director managed to show all the luxury and idleness of Gatsby's parties. The cast is very well chosen, because it coincided with my ideas about the characters while reading the book. I believe that the main star is undoubtedly Leonardo DiCaprio, who played the role of the Great Gatsby. Without him, this film would not have been such a success, because for many women around the world, he is a sex symbol.
It is also worth noting that the film contains all the events of the book, there are practically no omissions or inconsistencies. It really deserves respect.
I will definitely watch this movie again and recommend it to my friends.
Matveeva Yulia

I first saw The Great Gatsby when I was about fifteen. I watched it in English but couldn’t really understand what was going on, so I just enjoyed the scenes. This time I know the background of the action, I have read the book by Scott Fitzgerald, and I’m aware of the inner world of the main characters. The movie adaptation of The Great Gatsby made an impression on me, though I prefer more realistic depiction of life in movies and literature. Extravagant gowns of the guests, never-ending carnival and the heartbreaking love story – everything is exaggerated but makes you believe the story. I want to mention the Great Leonardo DiCaprio who greatly showed us complicated and many-sided soul of the Great Gatsby.

As for my favourite scene from the movie, it is definitely the one when Nick enters the living room at the Buchanans. I could feel the breeze and the soft touch of the flattering sheer curtains.

The last but not least, I would recommend to watch the movie if you’re seeking some visual satisfaction. However, if you’re interested in what the characters experience throughout the whole action, you definitely need to read the book.

Evgenia Burdakova

I was 14 when I read "The Great Gatsby". After I watched the movie, it really surprised me: a lot of bright scenes, parties, everything is visualized very well. I was left with the impression that after reading a warm romantic story.
Now I'm 19, watching the movie ended for me with an endless stream of thoughts.
Let's start with the cast. DiCaprio, as always good, played Gatsby perfectly, that's exactly how I imagined him. I don't like Tobey Maguire as an actor, in the role of Nick, too, the only emotion he had was a misunderstanding of what was happening. Daisy and Jordan are adorable, as is Tom.
When watching the movie, it seems that Daisy and Gatsby still have everything ahead of them. Maybe it's because I watch it on the screen, and not imagine it in my head. The scene, where Gatsby throws things on the bed where Daisy is sitting, gives great hope for a bright future for lovers. But knowing the ending of the film, I thought that probably my main fear is to be unhappy in love. It's very heartbreaking when two people can't be together because of certain circumstances. Or they realize too late that they are the only thing that is valuable to each other. But time can't be turned back. That's life. The film is very bright, beautiful, impressive. It also reflects very well the era of the roaring twenties.
But still, after watching the movie, it left a sadness in my heart. This suggests that the director was able to show the story so that it touched the hearts.

Mikryukova Maria

Cool music. Bad timing. No singing Wolfsheim..?

I should start by saying that I've watched this movie twice. For the first time - in the summer of this year before reading the novel. The second time I watched it in our wonderful group of classmates. Perhaps spoiling the whole plot was a mistake, but... You know, this is also a kind of unique experience.

Now, having read the novel, I can say with confidence that... The movie is not as good as I initially thought. Yes... On the other hand, it's still wonderful! I love the music from it: "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody" and "Young and Beautiful" have taken a special place in my playlist. This, of course, is not jazz, in the era of which the events of "The Great Gatsby" take place, but they are wonderful!

But even music will not smooth out my obvious dissatisfaction with how illiterate the timing in the movie was. I mean, the movie adaptation clearly lacks ballance: we have pompous Gatsby's parties that are important to show, but... you don't need to show them 70% of the entire narrative. Especially if it goes to the detriment of the denouement. It came out crumpled: it felt like only a few minutes had passed from Myrtle's death to George's suicide.

Personally, I missed Mr. Wolfsheim on the screen. He feels superfluous in this story due to the fact that he appeared only once and for a minute or two. That absurd scene from the book where he didn't even try to hide, pacing around the house and singing songs when Nick was trying to call him to Gatsby's funeral... it would complement the movie very well, seriously!

I want to believe that if the timing of the movie had been extended by at least 15 minutes, it would have looked much more solid.

On the other hand, I am delighted with how the authors of the movie presented the process of writing the book by Nick. It really looks very canonical.

by Polina Buhgamer

I didn't really understand anything that was going on, but the only thing that caught my attention were the costumes and scenery. The costumes were absolutely magical. We can say with full confidence that great attention was paid to the costumes when shooting the film. It is not surprising that it was for the costumes that this film won an Oscar.

When you watch a movie with voice acting in Russian, you get a completely different impression than when you watch it in the original. Now I can say with certainty that I enjoy watching a movie after reading a book much more than reading a book after watching a movie. It's very exciting to notice little details, phrases, words in the film that you read in the book. I like to watch how the director interprets everything that was mentioned in the book. It is very interesting to compare your impression and the images that have formed in your head with what you see on the screen.

Baz Luhrmann’s bright and pompous scenes of the parties contrast with the slower, more quiet episodes of people's lives, this is exactly how I imagined these pictures.

Filippova Yulia

I watched the film for the first time and I'm disappointed in it.

In my opinion, the actors are well chosen, but something is wrong with them. The pathos created around Gatsby has been preserved in the film, but it seems to me that Leonardo DiCaprio is not very suitable for this role.

I want to say that the film fully corresponds to the plot of the book.
The review of a person watching "The Great Gatsby" in the Nick of time

I got a chance to see an on-screen version of a classic book written by F.S.Fitzgerald. I had nor read nor watched it before our classes, so it is fair to say I watched it in the nick of my romantic age. So, it's time to express my opinion on it and to rate it.

First of all, general chaotic, fragmental narration and atmosphere of original was amazingly accurate. I saw Gatsby's mansion, Valley of Ashes, New York just as I had imagined when I read the book. The way shots transferred - from West Egg through the Green Light to East Egg - is very aesthetically pleasing. Generally, the accuracy, with which film follows the series of actions in the book, the way the key events are portrayed (parties, Nick's work, Gatsby and Daisy's long-awaited meeting, the quarrel in Plaza Hotel, Myrtle's death) are displayed in details (sometimes quite explicit).

The perfomances are show-stopping (to say at least). A casting-director did his job perfectly. Leonardo Diсaprio, Toby Maguire, Joel Edgerton and Elizabeth Debicki are the exact portayals of James Gatz, Nick Carraway, Tom Buchanan and Jordan Baker (in my mind). The choice of Carey Mulligan as Daisy is a little bit questionable in my mind (I imagined her as blue-eyed blondie), but nevertheless, the actress embodies the properties of innocence and natural beauty.

Another merit of the film are costumes. They are diverse, glistening, exaggerating, fashinable, and every outfit expesses the personality of a character wearing it (royal and pastel outfils for Daisy and Jordan are in a way the expression of their status and dignity, and, on the opposite, the vulgar, trite dresses for Myrtle and her sister are the portayal of their abject empty inner world).

In order to be fair I have to name at least 1 downgrade of the film (in comparison with a book). I suppose the scriptwriter's decision to make Nick mad after Gatsby's death is a little bit non-authentic. Nick is a sophisticated, profound person, and, although he is deeply wound by his friend's death, he moves on, suggests following Jay's optimistic approach to the world. Nich from the book wouldn't go mad, he would move on, carrying the memories of Gatsby's story.

My final rate - 9 out of 10. "The Great Gatsby" (both the film and the book) are in my favourites now.

The Great Gatsby has always been one of my favorite movies. In general, for everyone who watches this movie or has read the book, this story is incredible and memorable.

First of all, I want to highlight what a great movie. Incredible music that people still listen to and remember. Everyone associates it with this film. Incredible effects, luxury and much more. This movie is exactly luxurious. Watching it, you immerse yourself in that atmosphere, as if you become a part of this society. Fully immersed in this atmosphere, you forget about everything else.

Of course, the plot is also important and special. An insanely sad story about a great man, whom everyone remembered. His sincere love, futile attempts to create a life such as he would like to have. The plot fascinates us, makes us empathize with the characters and experience the same emotions as they do. Comparing a movie and a book is simply impossible. Because these two things are insanely beautiful.

I would also like to say that this film is one of my favorites. I review it very often, it makes me immerse myself in this gorgeous atmosphere, find myself in another world, feel like a part of more. It's incredibly wonderful. Also, I would like to mention this film for playing Leonardo DiCaprio. An excellent actor who fits perfectly into this film. He played the role as if he was Nick. It just pleases the eye, looking at it.

Thus, I would like to say that this is just a brilliant film that everyone should watch. To feel this atmosphere and immerse yourself in it completely is what everyone feels when watching a movie.

Sominich Sofya

The First impressions of The Great Gatsby on screen

This was my first time I’ve ever watched this film and my impressions are quite strong! The plot, of course, was familiar to me, since we’ve read the story on our lessons. But the realization of it by visual means of storytelling just held me in awe all the time. The circular plot structure with the shadow of Gatsby standing on the dock; the to-and-fro movements of the camera zooming on the green light at Daisy’s side; Nick’s going erratic after surviving the events of his life at West – and his incentive to add “GREAT” before “GATSBY” in the name of the book. All these details add up to the figurativeness of the picture, and, of course, to the delivering of the idea F.S. Fitzgerald wanted to convey to the readers.

We also can almost feel with our skin the ambience of Roaring Twenties: its chaotic parties, people driving up to Gatsby’s gates out of nowhere. Raves drowned in alcohol (literally, as Nick was pouring champagne right on his head) and abounding with lust – and Nick’s backwash, his “hangover” after parties of this sort was so vividly displayed that it makes a viewer ruminate about the meretriciousness of such superficiality and idleness.

There was, however, some incongruity in what I have seen with the plot of the book. Here on screen I’ve seen Daisy being more likeable and softer in her relations with Gatsby: she even wanted to answer his last call. And Tom – surprisingly – appeared to me more reserved than he seemed according to the book. And, regardless all the beautiful quotes, that I repeated after the actors (I couldn’t help counting the words and phrases we’ve discussed on our lessons!), my most beloved citation “God, I’m so sophisticated!” was not present :(

THE CAST! I ADORE IT! Almost all of the main characters were played by my personal icons: Leo DiCaprio (“Titanic”, “Aviator”, “Shutter Island”), Tobi Maguire (“Spiderman”). And, above all, Elizabeth Debicki – noble, lofty, infatuating! Her voice, her frame, her acting skills are definitely something ethereal. My eyes were glistening and my heart missed a beat every time she appeared on the screen. She is quite into “Roaring Twenties” as later, in 2018, she even played Fitzgerald’s coeval, Virginia Wolf. She manages to fit this epoch quite naturally.

The music is splendid: the feeling of joy you experience when you hear modern songs (quite popular among the youth of our epoch) but transformed in a way the youth would listen to them a century ago is literally breathtaking. The “ghonnection” (ha-ha) of the ages is what I can note among the great ‘devices’ used in the film.

Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy the movie! J’adore ça!

/p.s. Leo DiCaprio' s characters tend to die in the water - just a fun fact))/

It was worth of time. I’ve read the book twice and I liked the story and the language it was told. The film has the same good story and a very good acting, especially from Toby Maguire and Leonardo Dicaprio. I think Toby is the only one who is so capable of playing drunk Nick, the imitation of such drunk stare and very red face was so decent, that there is no hesitation. He is good actor and Leonardo Dicaprio squeezed out everything from his talent too, making his cheeks trembling as wild, as he could. I liked the music in the film despite that it wasn’t authentic jazz. The whole movie seemed to me a bit like a musical, a fairy musical, which corresponds with the magical dream of Gatsby. The film definitely made a good impact on me. After the film I imagine myself as a romantic dreamer with unattainable dream when I can’t reach something, for example failing to get on the bus in time or pass my exam. Now I usually say: And his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night.

Ivan Tiunov.

I've watched the film for the third time and still it was worth it. Actually, this time was quite special for me because previously I just enjoyed a beautiful film with good actors and that's it. Now that I've read the book I know more about the characters, I know their background and I understand them better. It really makes a watching of the film different, you start to see various implications and the whole film opens from the other side. Although not all the details from the book were shown in the film (probably, it was impossible to do that because the film would be too long), I believe the director did an excellent job. He managed to show the atmosphere of the roaring 20s, the luxuriousness of Gatsby's parties and the sadness of his end. Also, I really liked the actors and the way they represented the characters of the book. I would totally recommend to watch "The Great Gatsby" by Baz Luhrmann to everyone!

Belaya Polina

Due to some strange universe shenanigans, watching “The Great Gatsby” movie was my third time being encountered with the story about a hopeless romantic in the roaring 20s this year. Before that I had heard little to nothing about the story, the author, or the characters. But last summer I read “The Great Gatsby” in Russian, then we read it during the semester in English, and now I had just finished watching the 2013 movie staring Leonardo DiCaprio. My impression of the movie is a little dulled by the fact that I already new the plot very well, and also was well acquainted with the text of the novel and its most known quotes, but I still enjoyed the adaptation. It was a lovely way of visualizing the images of the characters and getting a more clear view on certain situations, that I didn’t quite get in the book. Although I have to admit that the movie definitely expanded my understanding of the scale of Gatsby parties: all the costumes, and the music (definitely too modernized for the time period the movie depicts, but it’s fine) and the decorations, food and drinks in Gatsby’s parties were much more bombastic than I imagined while reading.

Talking about the actors and their assigned roles, in the beginning I was I little dubious about most of the actor choices. But throughout the movie I understood that all the actors suited their roles and even brought some new light to them. Even Leonardo DiCaprio, concerning whom I have some unflattering opinions, looked very natural in this role. Gatsby is deeply, passionately in love, and DiCaprio has just the right type of look, the right type of stare and behavior that can depict this state of mind and soul. And talking about the actresses of the movie, I would like to say that I’m in love. All of them – Carey Mulligan (Daisy), Isla Fisher (Myrtle), Elizabeth Debicki (Jordan) – are talented, incredible, and beautiful. I enjoyed every second of their screentime.

In conclusion I would like to say that I love stories about hopeless romantics and splendid parties, but I think I’ve got enough of “The Great Gatsby” in the past six months. But I would love to return to this story in any shape or form in the future.

Polina Khachaturova

In the image of Gatsby was the actor, Leonardo DiCaprio. I've watched a lot of movies with this actor. But this film is something special. He played at the highest level here. Speaking in general, I really liked the film. I paid special attention to the scenery and elegant costumes of the characters. The film is very bright and colorful. The whole scale and volume are just gorgeous! All the evenings at Gatsby's house are shown in a very beautiful setting: crowds of people, smartly dressed dancers, music, dancing, beautifully dressed guests and so on. I advise everyone to watch it!
