Co-Teach presentations are graded based on the Danielson Rubric Domain 3 Instruction, Competency 3c, and 3d: Engaging Students in Learning and Assessment. Let's offer our colleagues feedback on their presentations for the evening. Feedback should include ways in which improvements can be made for the final unit plan and lesson plan submission.

I loved learning the phases of the moon. The whole topic is quite fascinating and kids will enjoy the activity. I just wish there was more of a detailed explanation to why there is more light at certain points of the phases. As a first grader they may not understand that moonlight is actually sunlight. I think showing more visuals would have definitely made your lesson plan more engaging.

Sun

Great job on the Sun lesson. I thought the video was great and age appropriate. I also liked the “fun facts”. Wish you would have gone into more detail about Copernicus, but that is just me being a nerd. Again, I think more visuals would help support the lesson and reach more students in the classroom. I think more slides, less words and maybe more interactive slides would have tightened up some of the loose ends.

All in all, it was a really terrific effort, especially since you took this on all by yourself.

The cookie demonstration is great for kids. It is a way they can connect with the phases of the moon and think about it when eating a cooking.
Be careful with the amount of text you are looking for 1st graders to read. Also the names of the phases of the moon - how do 1st graders spell that to write it on their page. Maybe spell it out with M&Ms to help them?

Props on doing this solo!
Moonshine
It was a cool lesson, wished kahoot worked but it’s ok to have technical difficulties. Just have backups and play it off like it was meant to not work haha. For first graders, it would be really hard to remember all the names of the phases and how it looks so the activity with the Oreos was nice but maybe have them also draw it out too because once those Oreos are devoured, there's no representation for the phases.
Sunshine
I liked that you asked us to use our background knowledge on what we know about the sun but also write 2 questions on what we would like to learn about the sun. Before showing the video, you should tell or show the students what to look out for. We need more participation from the students because for 6 year olds, their attention span are short so we need to keep them active.

Good job!

I like that the lesson contained content vocabulary and the video were age appropraite in helping students learn about the moon.
The slides should be less wordy and the vocabulary should have been at the grade level that sudents can understand. The lesson also incldued an age appropriate video for students to understand the Sun. The assessment at the end asking student's what they learned helped the teacher and the student assess learning. However, the questions that are being asked at certain points should also be visually displayed as opposed to being presented just orally. Also, the slides were wordy and including visuals on the slides will help supplement students' learning

Marjorie,
For the moonshine lesson, I like the use of Oreo cookies to show the 8 different phases of the moon. I thought it was a good way to show what each of the phases look like. However, I think it would have been helpful to provide a visual of what the moon looks like in each of the 8 different phases, before starting the activity with the Oreo cookies. I know a video was shown, but a visual such as an image would have been helpful so that when you were doing the experiment/activity with the Oreo cookies, the students could have something to help them remember which phase you are showing with the Oreo cookies.
For the sunshine lesson, I like how you had us share out about the sun. However, I think that including an opportunity for students to draw would be helpful as your lessons as you mentioned are for first graders. Having students draw their responses can be a great way to assess their thinking. You can always keep the option to label their drawing and write a sentence if they want to. There are some advanced first graders that will enjoy labeling their work while also writing sentences to explain their thinking or respond to a question(s).
Overall, I think you showed a good effort with both of your lessons. You included videos about your topics, and you asked some questions from the video. However, some of the questions such as "what is an axis?" might be a bit challenging for a first grader to answer unless they are looking at an image/visual that shows an axis. I suggest to include more visuals into your lessons and also think about how you will assess your students and check for understanding for each lesson.

Nice job!
Barbara

Whenever you can include Oreos into your lesson, it is a win! Using Oreos to demonstrate the phases of the moon is an awesome hands on activity for any age. I would just suggest that you include visuals of what the students should be doing from the beginning, middle, and end of the activity to guide students along the way. Also, for 1st graders, you can make the content as simple as possible so the students can retain the information. Maybe just focus on the full moon and new moon for the lesson.

Sun Lesson:
Glow: The video that you provided was entertaining, age appropriate, and supported the content. Grow: I would scale down on the words for the presentation and try to over as much visual support as possible for 1st graders along with music and movement.
