Indoor plumbing was first invented by the Indus Valley civilization. Baths were very common and used daily. The floors in their houses were made of bricks laid on their sides to make a water proof platform. The baths were also used for religious services and bathing rituals. A small hole would be at the bottom so the water could pour out and into the streets. They would place a brick in front on the whole and it would make a bath in their home. Toilets could only be afforded by the wealthy. The rich toilets were basically stacked bricks with a hole in the middle with a drain leading out.Plumbing was used for comfort and to make life easier on people. This invention impacted ancient India because when it was invented they didn't have to go in a bucket or a hole and just leave it there instead with the plumbing it allowed the waste to go to the sewer.

In this picture it shows that in Ancient India there was no privacy and you had to go in the open

Public bathing first existed in the Indus Valley civilization and existed in it's "purest" form until after the Roman Empire fell. In Mohenjo Daro the great bath was the largest public water tank in that time and was also the largest public bath. It was used in many of the other cities and provided hygiene, social opportunities, and a water source. Now public baths are available all over the world, and some are even in New York! They were originally a very social thing and it provided various civilizations a way for those who couldn't afford the private ones and even those who could still used them except those were more for them and their direct family.
