I understand how Sherry Turkle points out how we are connected but at the same time we are alone, because we are just connected through the use of technologies but doesn’t realize we are already distancing or creating barriers from ourself to the people.
Sherry Turkle said that "technology is powerful enough to alter the human psyche", it is a means by which we change who we are and what we do. I was scrolling on Facebook then I saw a saying that "Iba ako sa school, Iba ako sa chat, Iba ako sa personal", reading this supported the idea that we tend to show them what we want, its like we are becoming different from who we really are to what we show and who they believe who we are through social media. She also mentioned that we are afraid in connecting because of intimacy, there is a lot of reason why? Maybe we are afraid of getting attached to people with the reason that they will also only leave us, we are afraid of losing someone and letting go of someone we love. But doesn’t this make us become more lonely because we value something that is not real/true. We all know the difference how it feels with just merely expressing it through social media rather than to someone who understand us with the presence of emotion that opens a conversation.
It is hard to deny the fact that we became so dependent to our technologies, not thinking the disadvantages because we merely focus to its advantages, because it fully satisfy us our needs and through that we develop the idea that we dont need anyone. And that made us become less connected, creating boundaries from them and also forgetting how to value or treasure time, with the people who is always there for us, because we begun to expect and rely more on technology than each other. I also notice that holding my phone made me do nothing all day and that made me realize how I wasted my time uselessly. It is also clear that over usage of technology has led to a disembodied mind.
Technology have become a distraction to our lives, because of the impact that it contributed, we become addicted and obsessed to it to the point that we can say the word we cant live without it. I dont mean that we should stop using this technologies but we should just limit ourselves from the usage of it for us also to manage our focus to our other responsibilities (school, home, work etc.) and also for us to offer time and efforts to our precious love ones.
