A significant point in the book is the bus scene where the son wants to save the mother and punches the son of the black panther. I can relate to this wanting to protect your mom.

James is having a hard time in school because he needs money but his family has so little of it. This is affecting the way he has to live he had to get a job that he did not like. Also his mother had to sell their house and move to Delaware because the house was costing to much and they could not afford it this was life changing for them and made it a lot more difficult because they had to move to a new are not knowing know one and the mother had never done this alone.

What I find so amusing in these pages were how incredible James became he had every right to go down a different road he even was there for a bit when he was with chicken man but he ended up becoming a writer and him by himself going and learning about his mother's past which is so moving Which is why I did not think it was plausible from going from a smoking delinquent who barely finished high school to a writer with a family.

My takeaway from the book is that family does not need to be blood related in the book Ruth had a bad relationship with her father and her aunts but she made friends who she viewed better than them and Ruth was friends with Francis in high school but even though Ruth did not talk to her for a long time she was a friend when they met and helped her raise a family. Also Ruth ran away from her home and went to New York but when James went to her home town he met nice people that did not care that she ran away and had black children. What I'm trying to say is that family is who you believe them to be.
