Asking students questions is really important, because it will make the student feel like their ideas are being heard and that they're creating these ideas. If no questions were asked, it would seem like having another teacher grading it with barely an feedback.

When the tutee gets stuck on something, don't point out the mistake right away. Instead, ask questions that will guide them through the problem. "This technique helps the tutee reason through the problems." So, students build their own skill at identifying the problem instead of just listening to the solution.

In my own short span of being a tutor, I've noticed how important it is to ask the student, or tutee, questions. Even if they're clarification questions or questions about why they wrote a certain sentence. By asking questions, the student thinks for themselves instead of just listening other people's ideas that may not be what they're trying to say or write. Questions help students dig deep into their own writing for answers.

This video shows a great example of a bad tutoring session. The tutor didn't ask any questions apart to ask the tutee what she wanted to work on and to sign the agreement. This proved to be ineffective, since at the end of the session the tutee didn't feel like she was helped on anything. In the second scenario, the tutee asks plenty of questions so that the student get to go over the material she wants to go over.

An activity that was done to train normal students to become tutors was to role-play tutoring sessions. The PDF attached below gives a description on how to start it yourself. This can also be used to see the point of view of the tutee.
