Hi, my name is Peter Shen. I am from Sugar Land, Texas. I have lived there for all my life which is eighteen years. My family consists of my mom, dad, and older brother. My favorite hobby is playing basketball. My brother taught me how to play since i was eight and I've been playing since. Basketball has introduced and connected me to many of my friends that i have today.I came to the University of Texas to study pharmacy. This is my second semester here and it has been great so far. Many members of my family are on the medical path and i plan on doing the same.

The top left picture of the people holding up their hands and holding flags represents universalism. They are listening to the national anthem of the United States. It shows that all of them are considered as Americans. The top left picture of the prison also represents universalism. It illustrates how the law is important and that everyone who breaks the law will go to prison. No matter who it is, all criminals who are judged guilt have the possibility to go to prison. The bottom left picture of the different flags represents particularism. The children are showing off their different cultures and it illustrates how each one is unique. The last picture represents the extreme side of particularism. The KKK are think that whites are the most important and unique culture. They are all about white supremacy.

Individualism and community

The first picture on the left is a movie called Schindlers list. The movie is about a man that starts a business in WWII. He hires jews and is only in the business for his own profit. Later on he decides to help the Jews when they are in danger. He changes from an individual mindset to community since he loses profit and risks his own life to save a community of jews. The next picture is one of a store. It represents the free market economy in America and illustrates individualism. A free market economy allows anybody to open a business and make their own choices on how to run it. They are allowed to make their own decisions about their business and how they want to run it. The next picture shows a Parent Teacher association meeting. It represents community because the parents of students and the school work together to make the school a better place for children. They all share ideas on how to solve problems and work together. The last picture is similar to the PTA meeting but it is one for homeowners. The homeowners association have meetings and discuss ways to improve the neighborhoods and community. They work together and discuss conflicts .

Specificity vs Diffuseness

The first picture on the left represents specificity. It is a picture of neurosurgeons. They have to focus on one area of medicine which is the nervous system so they can be capable of performing surgery. The next picture illustrates diffuseness. The president has the most power in the United States. It is the presidents responsibility to do what is right for the country. That means they have to decide on what to do that will benefit all of America and not only what is good for only a small proportion. The third picture represents a therapist. A therapist is an example of diffuseness because they have to look at the overall picture of what could be wrong with the patient. They can't just focus on small details. Therapists have to put together pieces of information to create a diagnosis. The last picture represents an editor for a newspaper. The editor decides what is published in the newspaper. They have to think about what the public wants to hear. They put out papers that they think the majority of people want to read about so it is an example of diffuseness.

Achieved vs Ascribed

The first picture is Villanova winning the NCAA championship in 2016. It is an example of Achieved because the team worked hard to be great. Also their success led to a better opportunity for the players to get noticed by NBA scouts. The next picture is a picture of a college graduation. A college degree is an example of Achieved. A college degree is a reward for the hard work that a students puts into school. It leads to greater opportunities like good careers that wouldn't have been possible without a degree. The next picture is one of Shareef O'Neal, Shaq's son. Shaq is a retired Hall of Fame NBA player. His son Shareed is playing basketball in highschool right now. Everyone expects him to be great like his father. It puts a lot of pressure on him to preform and do well. The last picture is of Akon, a music artist. He is helping to provide electricity to the people in Africa. He is using his wealth that he has gained from his singing career to help other people. It is an example of Ascribed.

Inner vs Outer

The first picture represents an example of outer. During Chinese New Year, it is considered bad luck to wash your hair because the pronunciation for hair is similar to prosperity and it would be like washing away all your wealth for the new year. The next picture is one of fortune cookies. Inside a fortune cookie is a little prophecy. People who believe in fortune cookies probably believe in destiny too. The third picture is of Martin Luther King Jr. He was a preacher who fought for equal rights for blacks. He didn't sit back and let destiny guide him, but instead fought for the rights himself. The last picture represents inner. In order to become a doctor, one has to put in time and hard work. It doesn't happen because of luck or destiny. It is up to the whether or not they become doctors.

Sequential vs Synchronous time

The first example is one of sequential time. Amazon is a website where you can order items and they deliver the item to you. There is always a set date that they deliver by which you can change by the amount of money you decide to play. The next picture represents due dates for school assignments. There is always a set time for assignments to be due which people can not get around. It has to be turned in at the time its due or its late. The next picture represents synchronous time. It is a picture of Free Press, a music festival. It is where people can enjoy different kinds of music because there are many different concerts playing at the same time so people can enjoy many different styles. The last picture is one of mardi gras, which is an example of synchronous time. It is a festival in New Orleans where people party in the streets. They enjoy life without letting time restrain them.
