Day 1 Fusion Music

Day 1 Goal :

To be able to pick out and select two types of genre in music history one traditional and one modern day like music type and bond them together to bring back the traditional style into today's worlds.

Day 1 process : In my first day of this project, I’ve been working out my gerne types to mix together. And I’ve decided that I would stick to japanese traditional music mixing with EDM type and bring it back to today’s world. This is because I think that traditional Japanese music isn’t as viable in Japan any more as it was in the earlier days. Japanese music have been developing to much over the centuries resulting in a EDMic japanese music now days which are use in animes instead of earlier days which includes traditional japanese music. So in order to prevent a fade away in this music culture, I’ve decided that I’ll be remixing a traditional japanese songs mixing with the new EDM genre in order to bring back the traditional japanese music to the community in Japan and worldwide.

However, as I was picking the type of genre for fusing, I’ve realized that the traditional Japanese type of music was very hard to fuse with the EDM genre and that they don’t go well with each other. Japanese music genre also limits my ability to be able to creatively remix and twerk it to turn to a different genre type. So instead, I’ve decided to change over to Chinese Traditional music because a lot of my classmates are using it and it seems to fit a lot of music genre when being mixed together so I’ll be changing my traditional music type over to the Chinese traditional music.

Genere Analysis

Genre Analysis:

EDM:

(Electronic Dance Music) is the genre of music which has been developed just in the recent years of the music History. The idea started in the late 1970s, 1980s where the disco recordings created by artist is adapting in the new genre type called EDM music. EDM means an umbrella term in generally where it’s summarizing up the other sub music types like House, Trap, etc. It has recently being a trend to us today with the funky layout of each EDM song and the sounds put together in the song creates a catchy feeling for the people who are listening feel interested.

An EDM song is consisted of an Opening, A Middle Section, A peak, A beat drop and an ending. That’s mainly every EDM song structure that we see nowadays. They don’t technically always have a beat drop because it depends on whether or not the subcategory of that EDM is strong or weak, it determines the song structure.

Chinese traditional music:

(Chinese Music) is the genre of music which has been developed long ago dating back to the emperor's time when China is at the start of their colony. Their music are developed to write about the achievement of their kings to honor them or to talk about the different tradition of the people in their time. Chinese Traditional Songs are consists of a variety of instruments but mainly there are three well known instruments that are played with in an Chinese song now and in the past. It’s the Pipa, the Erhu and the Chinese Drum Set Kit. These three instruments are the main instruments that take part in most of the Chinese Traditional Song. The chinese traditional songs are normally played with a lot of stressed notes and a lot of up and down beats in the song.

It’s structure is pretty much similar to the other well know songs around the world with an Opening, a Middle part and an ending.

American Music:

American music type was one of my first choice in mind when it comes to choosing the genre type. However I’ve soon realized that the music would be hard to remix or bond it a different genre type. Because when I did my research, I was looking more to the marching music which is something that have only recently been created after the freedom war against the British government Lead by Washington, first official USA president. Not the ancient people who were concerned by the :New World. That music type back then is more wild and different from the American Music Today.

Day 2 Fusion Music Unit

Day 2 Goal:

To be able to get a head start on the starting of the song and going deep into the main part of it and also to find out elements that might help to remix a Chinese genre type song.

Day 2 process:

-Not much information was found

- The pages only discussed about the structure of the two genres not how to remix them

-Most of the sources on youtube ( video ) shows me a remixed version of the chinese song but basically what they’ve done is add in a couple of beats to make the song more aesthetic and lively instead of changing the dynamics and sound from the original song.

So from what I've found on most websites and you tube videos, there is not really any turtorials or tips that help you fuse EDM with Chinese music. So instead, I tried to practice fusing by picking a Chinese song and fusing it with EDM sounds and effect to get used to the genere. I wanted to be able to pick out a Chinese song that is not to easy but hard enough for my ability. Since a lot of Chinese traditional songs have been modify and made them sound more modern ( No Traditional Instrument used ), I need to look for songs that are played with pure instrument because my Intention was to bring that song and instrument become more familiarize and known by many people since that instrument and song was fading away from the real world.

BB Jazz Chinese song analysis

Overall Judgement:

I think that the fusion piece from BB mixing between Jazz and Chinese Music has a lot of interesting elements within the songs melody and it’s structure. I also have some points for adjustment that I think he can do in order to make his piece has more Jazz element within it.First I would like to discuss about the element that his piece is trying to imply in this fusion piece.

From what I’m able to hear in his music piece, I would say that the sounds have supported each other well to build up the Jazz element and melody as he has intended. The way that he has built the sounds and instrument around the main chinese instrument to make them stand out was fairly well done because I could listen to all of the chinese musical instrument that he want to imply. However in a quick note, I would say that he could decrease the sound in some parts of the songs because some of the instrument were covered over by the sounds which make them fade away and not on the main “spot”. I think that specific instrument could have affected the melody in a way. Besides the minor problem that some spot of the song has, the rest of the arrangement was very well done by him. He has effectively used his skills to time his melodies for each instrument and making the overall melody and timing very flexible. For example in some parts of the song where the melody needed a bit of dynamics, he included the drum sound and the cymbal which enlightens the piece up adding more jazz style element into it. His choice of Chinese instrument with the piano also fits the style really well. He included some parts in the song where the Erhu joins the main melody which stresses the melody out making it has the “jumping sound” that most of Jazz song has which of course once again emphasize a strong idea he has which is making the piece bonding into the Jazz genre. This is what I think about the structure of his song.

Moving on to the main part of the song the melody it self which is what I feel there could have been some adjustments made and added to make more Jazz like. I personally enjoyed what BB did with his melody because it sounds very simplistic but is very catchy and can infers a really good message to the people of his intentions which is to let them know that the traditional instruments have been used to play this song of his. And I feel like the message was inferred very well because the majority of his songs melody was played by the Chinese instruments. However, I think that he could have made an adjustment to his songs by adding more jumping melodies. What I mean is in a Jazz song, the artist normally has a melody that sounds somewhat different from other songs. Their chords, notes and texture of the song is very active because they have staccato notes which is what I feel that’s a bit missing in his song. His current song was very well done but maybe he could improve it more by adding what I said the “staccato” texture and the “long” holds in his melodies, I think that he can emphasis the Chinese Instrument even more effectively than the one he has currently.

Day 3 Fusion Music Unit

Day 3 Fusion Music Unit:

My 3rd day is the middle mark summary for my music unit of fusing music. (Christmas Break time) And I’ve realized some important points that I need to improve on for my song. Currently, with the song that I’ve picked, I feel like I wasn’t able to make the best use of my skill and fuse that song. I was to focused on how to make the song fuse with EDM rather than making the instrument of my choice more popular which was something that I lost track of in my fusion song of choice. So during the Christmas Break, I’ve relooked over my song that I’ve fused and I decided that I would change up the song that I’m making. Instead of fusing a Chinese song with the EDM genre, I’m now going to use the instrument of my choice the pipa to play the demons melody and then fuse it with the EDM genre. This would make the pipa to stand out more since it’s playing the main melody which is what I want out of my fusion song. This would be able to match my intentions better but also giving me an advantage because normally I’m used to these type of songs that I listen to every day so I would be able to perform better with fusing the instrument with the song rather than fusing a song that has a complicated and un normal melody like the earlier song of my choice.

I’ve decided that the structure of my song is going to insist of the main melody played by the Chinese Instrument, the pipa and it’ll be backed up by the chords of the song played by the guitar and piano. The chords are going to be played by the guitar and piano choice that relates the most to the EDM genre and then I’ll add in sound effects to make the texture more dense and sound like an EDM song fuse with a pop song Chinese instrument melody.
