Used houses that were built into the ground. They dug shallow 3 feet deep then built walls into the ground. They also used dirt and straw for flooring and beds. This was important for the reason of having housing and allowing people to live.

Without this they would not have built irrigation and canals. since they made these because of droughts so they can have water during them. The Hohokam laid out the foundation for our modern irrigation systems. They created their own irrigation canals and we, as a society, used their irrigation canals in order to create our own. The Hohokam made their irrigation system with the intention of watering crops. Another bonus is they got easier access to water.

A very long and strenuous drought. This ended up killing many since dehydration because they did not have enough water since there is no rain during these droughts. Since this was such a long drought it dried up the water they had collected so some either died or ended up migrating to other places or groups.

Without this the Hohokam would still be a big group, after this the Hohokam tribes dispersed.

Construction of irrigation canals 600 AD

The Hohokam started to actually build the canals. The canals were 12 feet deep, with smaller canals attached on the sides. The Hohokam building and constructing is the most important step. Without it, we wouldn't have our current irrigation systems.

Here they traded with each other items such as, pottery, jewelry, salt, cotton fabric, and stone bowls. This was an important first step because it helped evolve all the locations near each other at once. It also gave people a form of money to start out on.

Sometime around 1100 AD, the Hohokam constructed a canal used only for watering crops. This canal had a smaller canals fanning out. While the Hohokam could've used other canals for their crops, building a canal, strictly for crops was easier in the end. By doing this, the canal would essentially water the crops for them, so they didn't have to carry water to and from other canals.

Hohokam trades with the Mexicans 1 AD

The Hohokam then moved over to Arizona where they traded with the Mexicans. The Mexicans had rubber balls, copper bells, turquoise, obsidian, and macaws. This was important because it introduced new ideas to the table. The Macaws were the first pets.

The Hohokam vanished, probably traveling elsewhere, and left behind artifacts and such. In those artifacts, they left behind irrigation systems, that we used for our current, modern irrigation systems. If the Hohokam didn't leave behind their irrigation canals, we wouldn't have had ours. Our current irrigation system is fairly similar to the Hohokam, and without finding theirs, we wouldn't have had our foundation for our system.

in 500 Ad, the Hohokam created a new type of pottery called red-on-buff pottery. Red-on-buff pottery was a rare style of pottery that was highly valued at the time but dropped around 1150 AD. This is important because it shows what the Hohokam loved. it tells how important pottery was to their culture.
