This battery-free, light-powered pacemaker was developed by engineers at the University of Arizona. It uses optogenic stimulation of cardiac contraction cells, cardiomyocytes, to stimulate heart pacing. This new, noninvasive technology relies on 4 "petals" that surround the heart using light to generate a contraction. It is still currently being used for research in genetically-modified animals with hopes that it paves a new future for human cardiac patients (Hastings, 2022).
Invasive pacemakers that are currently used in practice can be painful and provide a shock to all cardiac cells. With this battery-free, light-powered pacemaker model, the optogenic stimulation allows for cell selectivity and is designed to be less invasive and provide less discomfort. Current experiments reveal the effectiveness of this customized, minimally invasive device for pacing and recording while exhibiting potential for self-adjusting arrhythmia induction in addition to defibrillation over chronic lifetimes (Ausra et. al, 2022).

* Optogenic stimulation provides cell specific stimulation to cardiomyocytes of the heart (Ausra et. al, 2022)
* Use of on-boarding technology provides real-time cardiac control, stimulation sensing, and computation (Ausra et. al, 2022)
* High-precision laser structuring enables rapid manufacturing and translation. This is also a cost effective process (Ausra et. al, 2022)
* Surgical procedures use a customized tool that enables rapid application, reducing the time the heart cavity is open (Ausra et. al, 2022).
* Higher energy budgets enabling computation with artificial intelligence to anticipate future cardiac events and gently intervene (Ausra et. al, 2022).

This new, noninvasive technology reduces costs, hospital stays, patient discomfort, and risk for postoperative infections while enhancing patient satisfaction and patient outcomes. The newly designed battery-free, light-powered pacemaker using ultralight thin films to provide cell specific stimulation allowing decreased discomfort during defibrillation. These devices allow for individuality by machine learning-guided design for specific phenotypes. (Ausra et. al, 2022).
I am excited to follow along with the progress of these experiments and have high hopes that this well provide effective changes within the cardiac community. This product can help millions of patients suffering with arrhythmias.

My top five strengths include: learner, discipline, achiever, consistency, and relator.

My strengths will help the team by using a strategic thinking model while continuously exhibiting a desire to learn and improve. Additionally, our team will use discipline to effectively execute our research and goals with productivity. As an achiever, I set high expectations for myself and those that I surround myself with, which also overlaps with my strength of consistency. Finally, as a relator, I always try to build strong relationships with others.

Based upon my strengths, I chose Alice, Carlee, Daisy, Louis, and Sheila for my team. I feel as though these members will be a strong asset to our team while providing different points of view.
