His garments for Das triadisches Ballett (1922; “ The tragic ballet"   I think are fantastic. Especially the spherercal and ring dress stand out to me because how he created these futuristic geometric shaped sillouhutes garments and garments was a great piece of research that stood out to me

Kansai Yamamoto was heavily influenced and inspired by Oskar Schlemmer’s costumes from The Tragic Ballet when creating the Ziggy Stardust jumpsuit for David Bowie’s in 1973.

I greatly admire this Ziggy Stardust jumpsuit that Kansai Yamamoto made for Bowi. When researching more into his way of working with shape, He was drawn to clean lines and strong forms, being an artist he brought elements of art and sculpture into many of his images.
For this masters stage I wanted to find out what His inspirations where behind his images that use shape I found he’s greatly inspired by historical photographers Man Ray’s experimental photographs with shape and Edward Weston’s sleek modernist forms photography. How they use the form and shape in there imagery deffinalty show this

Rei Kawakubo was another designer that I really admired her garments for there abstract designs. Collections which were of good research to me were A/W 2012, “2 Dimensions”,  S/S 2017, “Invisible Clothes” and I really admire how her clothes share qualities with sculptures and conceptual / performance art.

- This research of Peirre Cardin from my last module I thought was very beneficial and important to cary across Into this module as I am focusing researching historical fashion designers who use geometrical and abstract shape in there designs, I am also now wanting to go more in depth and focus on abstract and structural shapes he created in his designs and who were his influences.

Piere Cardin was Italian- french designer who created incredible avanat-garde garments, he was widely known for his space age and geometric designs.

My reaserch im wanitng to looking into is fashion designer who create geometrical abstract shape in there clothing and explore who there inspirations are. Pier has created a range of different abstract shaped garments.

 I especailly admire 1970S Pierre Cardin wool dress with cut-outs / 1971

The garment in which I feel fits the most with my research on geometric/abstract shape in fashion design. Is his garment 'The envelope dress' I admire how the garment starts of as a soft shape at the hips and torso but as it get up to the shoulders hard structural points are formed on the back and front of the shoulders. 

I amire how Balenciaga garments to have great sculptural and volumetric silhouette shapes to them. I also found it interesting how through the years of making his garments Balenciaga continued to abstracting the body. 

A quote that I really admired from Cristóbal Balenciaga 
“A good couturier should be: an architect for patterns, sculptor for form, painter for drawings, musician for harmony, and philosopher for measure.” 

Balenciaga was a spanish fashion designer widely known for his couturier garments. Cristobal Balenciaga was known as the 'The Master' of haute couture. In the mid-twentieth century Balenciaga changed the fashion silhouette of women in the way he created garments to have more sculptural shape to them. He was the first designer to create these outrageous new structural shaped garments for women.  

Some of Cristóbal Balenciaga most iconic structural garments included The sack dress, the balloon dress, the cocoon coat dress or the kimono sleeve coat and envelope dress these which where revolutionary for there time for the time.

This was when Piet Mondrian who was a french painter in the 20th century , who style of painting was called neoplasticism which was self informed by cubism. Mondrian takes a very simple approach when painting. just using geometric shapes (squares) and colours. I really admire Mondrian’s shape work, for his simplicity use of shapes. It is in the eyes of the viewer how they want to interpret his shape art work allows the viewer to be as imaginative as they wish.

Pete Mondrains work inspired many designers. One designer who's garment stood out and showed geometric shape meets fashion, was designer Yves Saint Laurent who wanted to payed tribute to Mondrian in 1965 made a collection 'The Mondrian Collection' part of the collection Yves Saint Laurent created cocktail dresses with Mondrian bight square and geometrical black lines imbedded. This collaboration was ground breaking in fashion history.

Ruth Hogben is British Film Director/Photographer/Creative Director who creates incredible fahsion films she has worked with designer many creative talents like Lady Gaga kanye west,Alexander Mqueen, Gareth pugh and worked for Nick Knight.

 I actully had the pleasure of meeting her during my last module were she came into the university talking about her work with Gareth pugh and Nick knight and showed ffashion films she directected.

There were two particular film that stood out to me (

A Beautiful Darkness: Ruth Hogben / Gareth Pugh and  Ruth Hogben Gareth Pugh s/s 2011 collection)

and I feel they would be good research for this masters when it comes to the composition of the shapes in a image and the posing of the model in a sculptural garment  .

stood out to me because of the shapes that the model made with Gareth Pughs garment in the way the model was directed to pose in the fashion film.

I was thinking how I could be creative and get ideas going on creating my own volume abstract garments with different materials I had around me. 

To create my volume geometric shapes garments I wanted to bring in my red sphere shapes that I had previously used in my last project as my set design for my Shape and Form shoot.  I also wanted a material that would fit around my balloons and would hold them in place to create a shape that I could wrap around my model.  The material I used were 2  fitted bed sheets and a duvet cover, string and safety pins and petticoats. Using a fitted bed sheet meant I was able to push the balloons into the elasticated corners and they held better, I also practiced just using a normal bed sheet but there wasn't enough material from corner to corner that I could tie off.

The colour of the sheets and duvets did not matter. I have the idea when I come to edit these images I will put them in black and white. I feel when I put the images in black and white it will make the audience focus on the geometric shaping of the garment.

WHos/ whats his inspiration?

When researching geometric silhouette fashion designers, Masion Margiela was one who particular stood out to me because of his spring Paris 2011 fashion show. It was his striking geometric silhouette shaped garments that he had created.
How he brought over the top dramatic structure to designs that you would normally just see as flowy fabric when on a human form, but it was as if Masion had created a abstract shape bodice out of cardboard, wood or hard plastic, its like he had attached the structure to the model. Then stretched over the materials over rectangular abstract shape bodice.

When looking at this collection that Masion has created it makes me wonder if he was trying to break/push the boundaries of a female silhouette and the norm of women clothing.  Making it more structural and masculine with creating structural lines to his garments.

Nikki and I exchanged Instagrams and I really like her instagram and the styling work she created. So I got networking with her asking her if she be interested in collaborating with me for my shoot with Ellie creating these geometric shaped dress (look 1, look 2, look 3, look 4, look 5look, 6 look.)

Through researching Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada, I found out that her father (Juan Manuel Ruiz de la Prada y Sanchiz) was a architect, her origins would of influenced her deconstruction fashion work in using solid abstract and geometrical shapes in her designs. By looking at Agatha bold silhouette theres no doubt that she must of been heavily influenced by the 1960s.

Ágatha is very playful when it comes to her creating her garments she goes above and beyond playing with the proportions of the body and volumes I really admire this about her work.
This rectangle garment particully stood out to me is a statement piece of her collection, this dress clearly pushes the boundaries of geometric shape and structure in fashion. I thought this dress created incredible structure.

Notes : For future shoots meet at least 1hr/2hrs before shoot allow time for make up and setting up • get a assistant so im not doing all the lighting on my own. (contact Paul BA photgraphy who niki the stylist suggested)
•Email Rosie head reception 24hrs before shoot.• styling needs to be rapid to get lots looks done  •make a whats app group with all the team in it.

I also had good but bad timing distraction of my professor Andrew and a university guest who was head of a magazine called Frow, come in when I was shooting. She wanted to speak to me while doing my shoot but I gave her my business card and said contact me at a later date.

Through this shoot I wanted to shoot singles images of each model and also shoot doubles. I directed Ellie and Sheridan to push there chest and hips out to further distort the shape. Sheridan had the (look 2) the plastic fish bowl + cardboard heart in her dress and Ellie had the black (look5+6). 
I would of liked to do all 6 looks that I had originally planned but there was not enough time. We only had a hour to shoot and I wanted to do shots with and without balloons and also bringing in plinths to bring in geometric shape in the set design too.
I also chose the colour black for the dresses as I love the contrast that the black made against white cove and red balloons. 
In this shoot I brought in geometric shapes through the garments set design and even the make up. "We didn't want anyone to know that she was pregnant," said Goude.  
Jeans Paul Goude's creativity knowlege had a positive  impact of grace jones style choices, art direction, as well as stage-managing her shows and creating her album artwork using his own photographs.

Both Grace Jones and Jean-Paul love and inspiration  for bright colours and shapes of design came from the the early 20th-century Bauhaus art school in Germany. 
The use of previous styles was one of the defining features that connected the work of architects and designers within the Postmodern movement, but Goude's approach was all about visual effect.

Although the geometric clothing was meant to hide the baby bump, these garments were the most iconic maternity garments of all time!

Bold yellow fabric lined the inside surface of the abstract shape with a grey and blue material lining the perimeter of the shape. These shapes were so eye catching and distracting that with the black panel skirting underneath hid the bump completely. With this research it has inspired me to get in contact with designers today who use bold shape with bright colours and experiment with using geometric shapes when shooting. Also has has inspired me to make my own garments out of colourd card.

This shoot was my last shoot at Birmingham city university. It was the last time was able to use the studios as they shut them for the BA summer holidays (which was ridiculous as MA students were still doing there masters in this time).

This shoot was immensely stressful to organise with uni making it difficult with timing and booking as well as working with new people. My shoot ran over 2 days 27-28th july back to back. 
On the 27th July this shoot I had a crew of lighting assistant, stylist, and 3 models. On the 28th I had my 2 models and camera assistant cancel on me just hours before the shoot.
This shoot was a big learning curve for me knowing who I could work with in the future and who may be not.

July 27th-  Although trains were on strike we left early enough with garments and got to uni. I made a Instagram group chat for us all to be in the loop of what was going on.  Learning from the previous test shoot and how long make up took I made it clear for people to get to uni 2 hours before to prep make up and garments. I Asked everyone to be at uni for 12pm as our studio was booked for 2pm. On this day I had the idea of shooting group shots and single shots of the models. 

July 28th- having shot the day before it was great that we able to leave all our garments make up, lenes etc at uni the night before. This day I was only left with my good freind and model ellie and Niki my assistant stylist and had some help from a bcu technician. I was desperately looking for other models that could use for my shoot but that day the bcu fashion show was going on and they were all taking part in that. On this day I had the idea of shooting more shots with balloons with models but that idea failed as my model didn't show up.

Once working out the lighting and setting up of the shoots I feel I managed to get some good shots that I could put on my Instagram and put in a zine for my final peice.

Although quite a bit went wrong on this shoot with the logistics of the shoot it was really fun to shoot clothing like this, I think the shapes and colour of these garments are incredible. Also I am proud of myself, I took the role of a producer/creative director, photographer, stylist etc. I organised the whole shoot from every detail with sorting out styling, lighting, models.

I decided to just have 2 plinths put side by side for the models to stand on. To give them a bit of height and show they are of importance by standing on the plinths. I Primarily wanted the bright clothes do the talking!

I found platform pink and black shoes which I felt looked liked the Versace Medusa Aevitas Platform pumps Fall 2021 runway. I thought these be great shoes to tie into my shoot as platforms were in fashion now. I also like the way he's composed the image, how the sculpture is not flat facing us, its turned to give more of a 3d feel. I also admire how he's kept the line where the wall splits in his image it creates structural angles and works well in relationship to the sharp lines of the garment sculpture within the image. Also the simplicity of the surrounding and background in this allows the 

KASTENMÄNNER 2008 sculpture collection to truly stand out. I want to integrate this simplicity of white background into my photography work and allow my garments that i shoot to be centre of attention. 


In looking through his work "Clothes Sculptures" this image really reminded me of the oversized square garments that  Kanye west used in his music video with Lil Pump "I Love it".

The inspiration behind making these gigantic garments was from the characters from the video game platform Roblox.
Looking at the garments in this music video has got me to think about contacting designers who use similar oversized shaped garments that take over the human body, and looked into designers who especially design/create garments that hide or distort the human figure.

In this book Largerfeld explores the notion of form. He works with a male model with an athletic physique posing against round and structural shapes. I greatly admire these series of images 
in which Largerfeld contrasts the accentuated soft curves of the body of the model against a deeply solid block form with a flat surface. He also creates shadow on the body, which emphasises the contrast further.

I put the garments on mannequins and folded them over on chairs and objects I found in my garden.   

It was fun and interesting working with the garments as soft play shapes. I also experimented with grouping the same  colour garments together as well as adding and taking away garments for the images.

The exhibition was at st ives Tate. This work was was my kind of art!

I took my self down to st ives to see the Ad Minoliti  exhibition the bright colours took over the room and the feeling/emotions of happiness and fun and safe place …

But in the end I felt like it flowed better by doing them in colour groups, adding in blank pages on the left pages where I thought was necessary to allow my work to breath and not be so clustered up together. 
 I also added in my cropped images of all the garments creating pages where you would see the garment detailed shape graphic design on the left page (as seen in image below)  before you would see the garment whole on the right side of the page kind of like a diptick.

I found this research of a conversation that Nik Knight (photographer) had with Gareth Pugh in another Magazine. It was interesting to read how Nick Knight talked about Gareth Pugh's garments, from a photographer/artistic point a view, talking about Garth Pughs work as a "cross between sculpture and form". He also talks how the form that Gareth's garments take, this leaves Nick thinking that the inspiration behind Gareth's creation of these garments from S/S 21 give a sense of clothing being a protection or amour covering the human form.

NK: The forms you’ve made in this collection are a cross-breed. They don’t look necessarily humanoid. They’re a cross between sculpture and human – they’re not machines, more a different way of looking at how people could be. A lot of your clothes, because they have always been so sculptural, do come across as armour or some form of protection. Is that fair? Do you see yourself as making things that are in some way protecting the wearer?

GP: Whenever we do anything in relation to clothes, we always like to imbue that wearer with a sense of empowerment, of strength. The idea of clothing as armour, I remember talking to Daphne Guinness about that – and it’s funny meeting someone like Daphne for the first time, because you expect her to be this total rock star, which she kind of is. Yet, actually, as a person she’s very quiet, very shy.

She said something super-insightful – that she wears what she wears so that people will look at what she has on rather than look at her. It’s either armour or a cloak of invisibility. That is something that really resonated with me – we make womenswear clothes, we wanted to do something positive. Trying to empower, to make someone feel strong, supported. So it’s all quite cyclical in that sense, but yes, I couldn’t agree more with the armour angle.

I also wanted to use this shoot to diversify my portfolio, use natural light instead and push conceptual boundaries.

For this shoot I wanted to used different colour colouramas backdrop that I felt complimented the TAK garments. The colouramas I wanted to use were purple, yellow ,pink and blue. I wanted to have images that outsourced the original colours of the garments but also contrasted with and complemented them (e.g., yellow garment against yellow colourama, but also yellow garment against purple background).
Due to university studios, facilities and kit being closed in August (this was a real set back for me) I had to resort to do this shoot in my garden. 
It was important that the weather was good as I was having to use natural light. When setting up this shoot I put the colourama up in place in my garden where the sun was facing everything was going smoothly untill wind came from behind the colourama and created all these creases which made shaddows in the colourma backdrop and even with weights on the stands of the backdrop it was still not enough to hold up from the wind. 

Originally I had wanted to do what I planned above with shooting different colour Tak Garments on maniquin ( that I would edit out later on photoshop) against different colouramas . But it to windy to keep changing the colouram's and I didn't want to keep ruining my my backdrops. 
I resorted to keeping my purple backdrop that was already set up and photograph my garments against this. 

This shoot turned out to be a slight disaster. But I was a good experiment to work with natural light and to know what things can go wrong when working on location with a backdrop. I still managed to get Some good images of the garments up close that actually resorted to working well with the purple colour's these images I took with a 50mm lens. 

I also wanted to get models in the garments against the colour backgrounds in another shoot I had planned. I used it as a backdrop to my my playing blocks. I was trying to use force perspective shooting with my phone from a low angle.

I also knew that London graduate fashion week london was running through June and university and graduates would be putting there work onto instagram for exposure. 

Learning from previous modules I understood that I needed to be organised with my time. Once knowing somewhat of what my masters subject was going to based on. It was important for me to get networking at the beginning stage of this masters so that I was able to plan my shoots and ideas. 
Emailing and instagram direct message was my way of communicating.

I am planning to work with a variety of these designers below and with the images I take, I will eventually create a picture book or lookbook.

I am inspired in the way nick knight uses a plinth to push the  importance of the garment and subject through fashion imagery.  I will be bringing in the importance of the plinth into my own imagery. I also want to use the same lighting technique using a flash on a crane directly above the model so my model is well lit and have my camera on a tripod low down to capture the model and the plinth. I will be shooting in Birmingham city university studios.

Ram Shergill is another photographer who I looked up as part of research for fashion photographers who shoot geometric shaped garments where he shot designer Jack Irving garments as seen above. I also admire this image as the garment totally contrast with the location. Ram is a photographer who shoot fashion, art and portraits.

I found this work by Photographer Shelia Metzner that she did for British Vogue, 1992.  In Shelia having a background in studying art and design you can really see she bring this across in the geometric shapes used in these images. I really admire how she mixes fashion with Geometric shape and how she used soft and hard lighting on the geometric shapes. The shadow created on the shapes creates the the look that they are not flat shapes but 3d geometric shapes.

Metzner work has inspired me to bring in geometric shape objects into my photography images and to think about how I would light the shapes in a studio environment.

Mod fashion stands for Modern/ modernist fashion.

How did it become to be?
Mod fashion emerged in the united states, Britain and France during the mid 1960. For women's wear the garments were simple geometric and bight the garments. The garments had a box like silhouette and a line mini dress. 

Although women weren't originally included in the mod movement they became increasingly involved with the mod movement. Women used fashion as freedom in the 1960s. The 60s led to young people wanting to voice their liberal opinions and views, mod women did that through there clothes. Hemlines got shorter and the loose fitting shape was brought into garments. Mod clothes were easier to wear, then to were they were rebelling against the tight fitting dresses 50s fashion.
-It was the mod women that gave Mary quant ( influential fashion designer in 1960s) mini skirt exposure and popularity.

It is his images from 1962 that he did of models in plastic bubbles floating in different cityscapes that are of great interest to me and inspire me to use sphereical geometric shapes in staging my own final MA images. The inspiration behind why sokolsky used a bubble was from the painting Hieronymus Bosch’s “Garden of Earthly Delights.
