Hello everyone, my name is Emilee Wolfe and I currently work as a Financial Aid Officer. I am in the M.A. Professional Counseling program and this is my first course in the program. In my role within the financial aid office, I assist a lot of low-income students and guide them through the process of receiving financial aid, reviewing their eligibility, and speaking with them about any special circumstance the student and the family may be facing. Throughout my career in financial aid, I have found that I am really interested in listening to people and navigating difficult situations, which has landed me into this program.

One of my goals for this course is to learn more about crisis prevention and threat assessment. I am really interested in identifying more crisis online resources for children and their families. Through volunteering in my community, I have seen firsthand just how important it can be to find valuable information and resources for people.

My biggest takeaway from reviewing the resources on mental health concerns is that “58.3% of young Americans, as young as 12 years old, used tobacco products, vaped nicotine, used alcohol, or used an illicit drug in the past month” (SAMHSA Releases Annual National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2025). This is a very alarming statistic because early substance abuse can disrupt brain development and there is an increased risk of long-term addiction for these young kids.

An experience that truly shaped who I am as a person is when one of my students had a very scary crisis and needed assistance for a multitude of resources such as housing, affordable medical care, etc. While it was completely out of my scope as a financial aid administrator, I truly wanted to be there for them as a sounding board for ideas. I quickly made a brochure full of information that I had found online with some resources available in our community, examples such as affordable housing, affordable medical care, and money management strategies. Like many others, I have experienced mental health issues and also traumatic moments in my life. I am very privileged and feel lucky that I had a very supportive network in my life during those events. With the results from the quiz that I chose to take (CDC Mental Health Quiz), I got a 100% and this makes sense given my experience with mental health, burnout, and education in psychology. I want to continue learning about the different ways that I can serve my community by providing mental health services.

In my future role as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), knowledge of crisis and trauma management is vital to help the various needs of my clients. I hope to continue developing my interpersonal skills and sensitivity to create a validating and safe environment for individuals and their families to navigate their own crises and trauma.

The article I found is about adolescent mental health from the CDC. In 2023, nearly 4 in 10 students had persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness. The downward trend of adolescent mental health is extremely sad, as these thoughts can carry into their adult life and worsen as they gain more responsibilities. I found this significant because I am passionate about having children and adolescents build confidence and community. I truly believe that confidence and community play such a vital role in an individual’s mental health. Poor mental health also severely affects performance in school for adolescents, including avoidance of the classroom.

I am excited to get to know y’all and collaborate within our groups this semester!

Best Regards,

Emilee Wolfe

This assignment was a great introduction to my peers and how to navigate our course. I really appreciated everyone else's thoughts about their own career trajectory and how excited they were to learn more about crisis intervention. Crisis intervention is extremely important in my future role as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), as I will be dealing with individuals and their families and I want to be well-equipped if a crisis were to come up. My goal is to foster a safe and productive counseling environment for my clients and the first step to that is making sure that I stay educated and informed on current psychology literature and counseling techniques.

The Reference Guide for Mental Health Disorders was very helpful in learning about each mental health disorder and their symptoms. I also enjoyed receiving the opportunity to look for my own article or other intervention method on my own, as this made the assignment feel much more interactive. One of the more difficult mental health disorders to research was Bipolar Disorder because you have Bipolar I and Bipolar II and they present with different, but similar symptoms, so there are not as many interventions out there other than telling an individual to contact a mental health professional.

The discussion posts for developmental trauma taught me a lot about being trauma-informed and also certain signs to look out for. For example, I watched the documentary called, 9/11: The Final Minutes of Flight 93. While there were no specific survivors, they did have surviving family members on there and those individuals were still experiencing secondhand trauma 19 years later; especially while they were recounting the events that took place. The family members featured in the documentary all had phone calls and had left voicemails to their loved ones right before Flight 93 crashed, it was even more traumatizing to them since they had previously spoken to their family member and knew they would not be making it home. This documentary had also done something that others had not done before, which was compile phone call logs, voicemails, the flight pattern, and the transponder flight information to recount the exact details of how the heroic passengers of Flight 93 took control from the hijackers and crashed in a random field, sacrificing their own lives for the sake of others.

The Psychological First Aid online certificate is beneficial to me as a future Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), because it helps enhance crisis intervention skills, demonstrates professional development, applies to a wide range of clients, and aligns with trauma-informed care. This will help me in my future career to respond promptly and effectively to clients in crisis and reinforce the trauma-informed approach to counseling.

The PDF presentation on 'Dating Violence' from my group has important resources regarding at-risk behaviors, collaboration protocol, and cultural competence. This assignment is very important in highlighting just how useful collaborating with others can be. My group met over Zoom once beforehand to go over who would do which parts and what we felt comfortable with. Our specific PDF looks and feels cohesive even though 4 separate people worked on it. It looks that way because we discussed the subject and expectations before ever working on the project.

The ABC Model Case Study ultimately shows a deep understanding of crisis intervention concepts, especially things that were learned from the "Psychological First Aid online certificate". There were so many things that I learned from this class that I will proudly take into my career as a future Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). In the future I would like to work with younger populations, so when I picked my case study (14 year old male), I kept that in mind. The case study showed me that I was able to use crucial crisis intervention and strategies to help the case study's circumstance.
