The people of Salem had very troublesome relationships between each other. There were quarrels for grazing rights and property lines. They had to get a minister in order to settle disputes, but multiple ministers passed since the residents had problems with paying the ministers. They finally successfully ordained and payed the minister Samuel Parris.

The leaders of Salem were strict religious conservatives. Plus, the church was heavily influenced by Calvinism. The Puritans believed that they were already predestined to Heaven or not. This led to endless striving to be the most pure one can be, but without knowing if you'll be rewarded or not. Which also had made the citizens majorly hypocritical, acting "pure" in public and being a terrible person in private. In addition, people were always trying to find a sign that they were one of the chosen to be part of heaven which made a sense of superiority between the citizens.

Women were seen as inherently sinful and thought to be more susceptible to be taken by evil. The Puritans believed that, more than anyone, women were fighting off acts by the Devil. At the time the women were noticed as weak and frail, so the Devil could get to them easier. Therefore, it was mainly women who were accused of being a witch. The widespread misogyny within Salem had made the town very skeptical of the women in their town as well as the women being scared of being accused

The paranoia in Britain led to those people being killed from the accusations. Plus, the paranoia followed the Puritans as they crossed the Atlantic.

The children of Salem also had a radical hysteria. They were influenced by listening to voodoo tales from Tituba, a slave, and started having strange behavior. They would randomly scream, contorted their bodies, or stated they were feeling biting/pinching sensations. This led to the people of Salem believe the Devil was working in their town and there were witches affecting the girls. The girls started accusing people of being affected by the devil and the paranoia of the town made them believe the girls.
