The extra copy messes up the normal development. Another cause is when the chromosome 13 becomes attached to another chromosome during the formation of reproductive cells. If the physician sees abnormalities, they may suggest noninvasive genetic testings like  MaterniT® 21 PLUS which will allow the doctor to analyze the chances of the child having Patau Syndrome.

However, if the child does, you cannot necessarily get rid of the disorder but you can help with some symptoms of it. For example, the child can get a tracheotomy which is a surgical procedure that puts a hole in the neck that leads to the windpipe which a breathing tube may be placed in.
