The Watergate scandal began early in the morning of June 17, 1972, when several burglars were arrested in the office of the Democratic National Committee, located in the Watergate complex of buildings in Washington, D.C. This was no ordinary robbery: The robbers were connected to President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign, and they had been caught wiretapping phones and stealing documents. Nixon took aggressive steps to cover up the crime afterwards, and in August 1974, after his role in the conspiracy was revealed, Nixon resigned. The Watergate scandal changed American politics forever, leading many Americans to question their leaders and think more critically about the presidency.

The 1970s saw rising prices, a new trade deficit, and rising unemployment. To combat inflation, Nixon cut spending on social programs, and took America off the gold standard. When these measures did not work, he imposed the first peacetime wage and price controls. All of these attempts to control inflation proved unsuccessful.

Nixon believed that the most important role of presidency was directing the country's foreign policy, and did so by opening diplomatic relations with communist china and beginning a detente with the soviet union. by reopening relations with china, after the communist revolution in 1949. many thought the idea of communication with the Chinese was a bad idea, but Nixon became the first american president to visit mainland china. he also made a detente plan with the soviet union halting development of defensive missile systems.

President Nixon signed a law that created the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, to protect the environment. The EPA sets air and water pollution standards for cities, and engages in monitoring and enforcement activities. New construction projects must pass through detailed environmental impact reviews before being approved. Private citizens can file lawsuits against polluters under the EPA.
Nixon also signed the Endangered Species Act (1973). This law requires the Fish and Wildlife Service to list species of plants and animals that are threatened with extinction, and then to take further steps to protect them.
