Also, it has the ability for attendees to respond to each other with Vlogs. I find that this helps to also create the community in a distance setting. When I am able to see and hear someone's response- they are now a person not just words.

Added by Jane Doe

Google Translate provides an immediate, free, web-based option for English Language Learners (ELLs) to translate text and documents into their native language. Google Translate allows the user to "save" translated text/documents and participate in an online community that enhances the accuracy of translation for the particular language. The community functions as a sort of crowd sourced QA process.

There are many ELLs in nursing and incorporating Google Translate will promote understanding and clarify vocabulary and symbols, thus positively affecting the recognition network in the learner's brain or the "what" of learning.

Learners hold up cards with codes in response to the teacher's questions. The teacher can point her phone or other device at the room and immediately knows who is doing well and who needs more review of the material. Perhaps best of all, the learners don't need devices of their own to participate.

Because the students’ responses are anonymous, they feel empowered to be open and honest about their comprehension level. This can reduce the barriers that second-language learners often have when admitting how much they do or do not understand. Based on the results of the poll, I can quickly adapt my lesson to assure that everyone is meeting the goals I have set for them.

Home - Canva
Heather Anderson-Bibler

I chose Canva for one of my tools to help students choose between creating an Infographic for an assignment OR writing a paper. This allows students to choose how they want to demonstrate their learning which might match better with their learning style. Currently, written assignments are the only option for students. But what if my students could better demonstrate what they have learned a different way? Maybe they could earn higher grades if the assignment was more aligned to how they learn best. I would likely offer more options than just these two options, but this is an example.

Canva is really easy to use, and there are many templates students can choose from to create their infographics. Students can also use Canva to create presentations, resumes, posters, social media posts, flyers, videos and more! Once students are exposed to Canva they could use it for other purposed in the future. There is a free trial, but then you have to pay which is not ideal. Potentially I could buy a team subscription for the course so this is not an issue.

I have used slido before during virtual sessions on Zoom and incorporated it even directly into my slides through MS powerpoint. It's a great way to open up discussion that is anonymous (poll with multiple choice, word clouds, text submissions) that they can access through a QR code from slido slide or by entering a short numerical code at the slido website. You can turn on/off slido, time them, and I found it to be easier of a tool to use than some of it's competitors like PollEverywhere, Zoom's own poll (which is limited to multiple choice). It's a great way to get people to engage and give some feedback or submit questions freely.

(name of learner)
This is a tool that allows for anonymous polling. I've found it to be a very effective way to keep learners engaged and provide some formative assessment. One thing I appreciate about this tool is that it allows people to log into the same poll via the web (with a QR Code link), their app, or by SMS Text. Having the text-based option has been very helpful as it doesn't require smartphone ownership and requires older technical skills (which helps some of my less technically savvy learners). Poll responses can be displayed to learners when the instructor chooses. However, I have found the use of the website a bit clunky when holding a Zoom or Webex meeting as it requires me to switch between presentation screens.

Mary Hughes
Kami is a great tool that supports the principles of UDL. It is a Chrome extension app and can be integrated into Canvas and Google Classroom. KAMI allows the instructor to provide multiple means of representation. Instructors can take a PDF, share it with students, and “bring it to life” by inserting features such as text boxes for comments or guided notes, annotations, audio comments, and videos. Students benefit by having multiple ways to access learning. Students also have the ability to use the text to speech feature where they can highlight text and have it read to them. KAMI is also useful for providing multiple means of action and expression. Students are able to show what they know in different ways by making a video, voice recording, annotations, or comments in text boxes.

Jamboard acts both as a white board and a message board. A useful way to use this tool is to have it as a platform for students to “Show What you Know” or answer a comprehension check question based on a main lesson. Another way to use this application is to use it as an introduction for a lesson, for example when conducting a brainstorming session or to aggregate useful vocabulary. Jamboard also has useful settings for sharing. You can provide a link through which anyone can contribute or you can restrict access to only people you directly invite.

This let's us compile examples to view and better understand the topic and allows learners to share their experiences.

By Sarah Thompson

This tool fits a few different categories, so I added it here. The Read & Write tool is an extension on your Chrome browser (works on other browsers too); it offers embedded literacy support for learners. Learners are able to use Read & Write with Google suite, PDFs, ePubs, and webpages. It provides more access to digital content for learners, especially learners who need extra support in reading and writing. It can be used for text-to-speech, speech-to-text, text and picture dictionaries (good for comprehension and vocabulary building), highlighting tool which collects highlighted information to summarize or synthesize with ease (excellent for informational display), and create voice notes when annotating texts. Many students use it in public education as do many educators. It removes the barriers that may impact learners who need a little extra literacy support when interacting with digital content. An all around great tool that learners can use at their discretion. After further investigation, it appears the free version only offers text-to-speech. The premium version offers all the other bells and whistles I listed. It costs $150/year for the premium. I will say though that many school districts and universities are purchasing it and are offering it free to their students which seems to be reasonable since it increases access to resources and materials for eLearning.

You can upload courses created in slide-based programs like PowerPoint or Google Slides, for example, and add elements such as interactive slides, videos, questions, gamification activities, whiteboards, worksheets, and more.

This great resource can be used to make both instructor led and self-paced online courses more engaging for learners. Educators have access to a library of pre-made lessons, videos and activities that can either be used "as is" or customized as needed. I haven't fully explored I believe it is a great tool with so many resources that can be used as part of an e-learning experience. I liked that it is user friendly and that it has lots of free content that can be used. Depending on the kind of document you want to create you can choose a template and work with that as a base and edit what is already there or even add text, images, etc. I am still learning to use it but it seems like a great tool that covers different kinds of media that can be useful for e-learning.

These browser add-ons allow pop-ups for Japanese language vocabulary encountered on a website. My language students have used it to be able to access material that is otherwise beyond their current abilities. While it will only translate one word at a time, the database it uses is generally more reliable than Google translate, so it's great for Japanese language students who are familiar with basic grammar structures but might not know certain terms. These tools will also work on a Google doc, so students can copy/paste content beyond what they find on the web that otherwise might not be accessible.

Rikaichan (Firefox add-on): https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-us/firefox/addon/rikaichan/

Rikaikun (Chrome add-on): https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/rikaikun/jipdnfibhldikgcjhfnomkfpcebammhp?hl=en

--Kim Mc Nelly

Otter.ai, at the time I used it, was more accurate than youtube or Zoom speech-to-text translations, although this is a field that is changing rapidly.

The one thing that made its use possible in the hi-flex and in-person settings is that the instructor MUST wear a microphone. I used a two-channel wireless mic that allowed me to wear a lav mic and also has a handheld mic to record students when they spoke. That put all voices onto the recorded class session and allowed Otter.ai to make a transcript.

Submitted by: Renee Miller
This tool is a great way to increase student engagement through the use of a virtual scavenger hunt. One way I have used it is in teaching camera angles. Students form groups and race to submit images they have taken using the correct camera angle. We then meet to view and discuss the submissions. Learners can submit images or videos individually or in teams to demonstrate understanding or find learning examples in their environment. The free version only supports 5 teams/users, so it's important to factor that in. There is a library of pre-made games and the ability to create your own content-specific games.

Charlie student
An assignment that I use to foster belongingness in DEIA classes is the Culture Chest. iMovie is a free video-editing app. It has multiple editing features that make it as easy to use as PowerPoint. This includes the ability to create titles, transitions, music, other media, or just using your own smartphone’s video feature. It has multiple built-in styles, the ability to delete, trim, split, or rearrange clips. The software also has the ability to “hear the magic as your music dynamically recomposes to the length of your project.” The students would have the option of using iMovie to create their assignment. I believe This would fall under all three: engagement, representation, and action and expression. The original assignment is described below.

The culture chest assignment is designed to help us begin to understand our own and each other's important social and cultural identities, and the dynamics around these identities. We will share our Culture Chest with the entire class to generate dialogue amongst ourselves about the meanings of our multiple cultural and social identities.

Preparing the Culture Chest

Choose a small box or a paper bag as your "chest," or create a container of some kind to display your items. You may be as creative here as you wish. One person made a huge puzzle that she laid out on the floor, with each piece representing one of her identities. People have used music, movement, etc in addition to words. Basic is quite acceptable; for example, a simple box with words on the outside and items on the inside.

Next, choose 3 or more items (most everyone includes more than three) that describe your membership in various social/cultural groups (Race, Ethnicity, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Ability, Religion, Social Class, Tribe, Age, etc.) which are "close to your heart." These items could be a photograph, piece of art, book, music, or anything that describes aspects of who you are, and that are meaningful to you. Place these items inside your "chest." These items reflect how you see and feel yourself internally (the key thing here is that this is how you see, feel, experience yourself, not necessarily how others see you).

Lastly, decorate the outside of the chest with images (pictures, your own drawings, words/phrases) that describe how you think other people see these aspects of you and/or your social/cultural groups. These words describe what you get reflected back at you from others, which may or may not be congruent with YOUR internal self image. A goal here is to see the similarities and differences between how you see yourself and what comes at you from others, including media, advertising, etc. Get it?

I would like to expand on Flipgrid. This is a great collaborative tool in which learners can share their ideas recording themselves. Teachers can use it with students in different ways, while ensuring that students feel comfortable sharing their opinions. I personally like to encourage students to explore the different features the app offers such as fun filters and emojis. Sometimes students feel shy or insecure to share their ideas on videos, and this can add up some anxiety that can be tackle teaching students how to use these features. For example,I have had students use Flipgrid in my Spanish as Second Language class, at the beginning of a course to gain confidence and later they feel comfortable to show their faces and even share longer interactions in a foreign language. I can also model the exercise, which help them understand better their assignments. Students can also share comments and like their peers’ posts which is great to build a community in the classroom. This tool can definitely provide options for expression and communication.

Jhonatan Carmona
Designing Effective eLearning class

Scribe has been a tool that I have used to present information in another way! In addition to video and audio directions, Scribe helps to instantly create a step-by-step guide without you having to think about your actions to complete a task. I always find that I perform some editing to the automatic directions (which are minimal) to provide more clarity in the steps. It is another way to present information! I have thought about how this tool can be used beyond step by step guides and possibly for demonstrating how to complete problems as well.

Kahoot quizzes are an easy way to engage students and let them know what to expect in the workshop. There are checklist options as well as an option to set reminders. As an instructional designer, providing assignments with integrated Keep elements (assignments chunked into a checklist, due dates to add as reminders, and even benchmark dates for those chunked list items) helps learners engage with assignments in a structured fashion even if they need support around executive function.

One of my favorite tools is the task list where you can create and assign tasks. This would be great for group project organization!

--Tabetha Gould

Kaltura Learning provides tools that can be used for editing video for your lesson/training. It can also be used to create a video quiz (by adding multiple-choice, true/false, and open-ended questions) or add prompts at important points in the video for learners to think about or respond to. This can increase the level of engagement and turn what is often a passive activity (watching a video) into an interactive one. The video/video quiz can be incorporated into the Canvas LMS as an assignment or quiz.

Hopkins Universal Design for Learning (HUDL) was developed at Johns Hopkins University. It provides a simple framework for incorporating UDL into your course/training. It also includes a “Getting Started” guide for instructors, exemplars of how the HUDL framework has been applied in real-life instructional contexts, and an extensive resource library, full of links to helpful sites and tools.

Shout out to JamBoard!

I have used JamBoard in my classroom when I was a middle school teacher, in professional development courses, and now in the corporate world as a team collaboration tool. It is vary versatile! I must admit though that I prefer it in adult/professional environments because when I used it with middle schoolers, there was always at least one student who would use it inappropriately, and since it is live, I could not preview their posts first. I think the format of JamBoard is very easy to use and the colors and variety of tools are very engaging for both kids and adults alike! Sadly, JamBoard is going away at the end of 2024. Not sure what will replace it, but hopefully a similar tool will be developed! (post by M. Milligan)

Added by Emma Shott

Blooket is a great tool for reviewing and practicing different skills. It allows students to respond individually. It also encourages answering correctly vs. quickly which I find really motivating for students. I can get a quick understanding of how students are doing with certain concepts. In addition to review for things I might have taught, I also think it is a great tool for students to use to generate their own questions about a topic they have become an expert in. Recently, I have had students work on "Expert Projects" where they research a topic and then have to present information to the class. One component of this is for students to create an assessment. Many students used Blooket and it was a great way for me to see their understanding based off of the questions they asked their peers to answer.

While Google Workplace is a paid feature - nearly all of the features in Google Workplace are free for individual Google Users. You can use/ community collaborate on Google Word, Excel, PowerPoint equivalents. Host group video meetings, manage/share calendars, store passwords/notes/photos, & more - just by having a Google account.

Multiple Services Included: Google Workplace services are listed in multiple categories along the Padlet page - showing that staying within Google Workspace creates all-in-one experience for a variety of accessibility needs.

Poll Everywhere has a variety of types of questions you can ask and ways to display the answer. I've seen it used in all-staff meetings at my company to have people submit their dream vacation destination by tapping on a map, and then we could see the map on the screen light up with everyone's responses; and to have people submit their one-word answers to questions (like the name of a person who helped you recently, or your favorite thing about the job) and make a word cloud out of it. I could see these being super fun for a class with quizzes or feedback.

Michelle Brown
