I was always nervous about adding personality to my posts. This kept me from getting easy extra points when all I needed to do was add a GIF that I found funny and applied to our discussion.

I haven't ever invested before and from what I have learned from this class I feel like I have been missing out on a lot of savings!
As far as how I could have done better in this class goes, I wish I would have known how similar the final presentation is to the apply assignments you do along the way! They did mention it, but it was something I saved until the end and it ended up being more work that way. It is definitely worth it to start working on your final slides early, as you are doing your weekly assignments so you don't have a bunch of work to do at the end!

When I was just starting this class, I felt overwhelmed by all the math. However, throughout the course, I have realized how life changing basic formulas can be and how we have so many tools accessible to us that can aid us to be financially successful. Dare to do math and invest a good amount of time understanding it. This will effectively assist you with making life changing decisions in the smartest way possible. I believe that Heavenly Father has given us the gift of discerning and all the tools needed to choose the right. For all of those ambiguous moments in life, it is essential that we do all we can in our power and ultimately rely on Him for guidance.

EXTRA POINTS are not a joke—they really can be achieved each week if you put in the effort. Be real with your comments and add personality to them. Go above and beyond by commenting on more than the assigned 2 other classmate’s post. You can get up to 3 extra points that way by commenting just 3 more posts. Else, be so helpful in what you say and find an appropriate meme or gif :) Sometimes you can even get the comment of the week and get extra points that way. Just try and do your best and you’ll do well in this class (even if you don’t ace the taxes assignment—it won’t bomb your grade, I promise)! ALSO! My best friend for this course was the calendar. I used the calendar to make sure I was getting assignments done and knew what needed to be done each week and it was satisfying to see when assignments, quizzes, and tests were crossed off. It kept me on target with accomplishing ALL the things each week! :)

The entire time I was in this class I was wondering WHY on earth this isn't taught in high school or why it isn't a required class!! I'm so so glad I took this class seriously. My biggest tip is to be consistent with the readings and workbook. The workbook was an enormous help to me. I have never been very good at math, but the concepts and formulas taught in this class really are not difficult if you follow the workbook. Just do your best and take advantage of all of the extra points that you can get by retaking the quizzes or getting comment of the week, and you will be fine. This course is really set up for you to succeed! Take it seriously and it will be a HUGE blessing in your life - because these are concepts that you will actually use in your life daily.

Taking SLF 260 my eyes have really been opened to money and the types of things adults (which should be me) need to know about in order to be successful. One of the most eye opening experiences was tracking my budget. For this assignment we had to make a budget and then for the next two months track what we were spending. It was incredibly eye opening because when I set my budget, I assumed I would have a lot left over in my surplus. To my surprise, this was not the case but I actually only had a little left over. This made me even more aware the next month I was tracking, to watch the little things I bought. The small cheap things add up after a while and they are sneaky because they seem so cheap. These things were what really got me. But because of this assignment I was able to watch those purchases and become even more aware of where my money was going. It helped me to save more money the next month. This class is really hands on and helpful because it applies to our lives and can improve them. LET THIS CLASS IMPROVE YOUR LIFE!

Combining this with the workbook problems and the online content, I learned so much about the little finance details that we all need. While you can still do well on the quizzes without reading it entirely, I highly recommend reading and working through the workbook. You'll feel so much better about doing your finances for real someday! It makes the math so much easier.

Tips For Success!

This class is awesome (honestly i'm not just saying that. I came into this class worried because MATH and also FINANCE, but I was pleasantly surprised, and you can be too! This class is actually super doable if you follow directions and ask questions when you are confused. My main tips would be...
1. Utilize your TA whenever you have questions or are confused about anything.
2. Watch the reviews and study the whole study guide. Honestly all the math questions are basically the same as the questions on the study guide.
3. Don't just study the study guide. There are always questions on the tests that are not on the study guides. For that reason it is important to do all the readings and to watch all of the videos (also they are just super helpful and interesting).
4. Watch for extra credit opportunities (there are lots), and don't forget to post your first comment in the discussion group before each Wednesday.
5. My last tip (i know- finally) is to just enjoy this class and take in all that you can from it. You know how in college there are some classes that you take just to get the grade, and others that you will actually remember and use in your life? This class is one that will help you in the future if you actually take the time to learn the material and to internalize it. DO IT. That is all. Good luck!

The Small Things

This is just a small thing, but make sure to save links to the houses you choose for the project! I remember I needed some information on the houses for an assignment later on and spent almost an hour trying to find the listings for the houses. Another thing that I highly recommend: take time to learn how to use the financial calculator. For the first few quizzes, I thought that the calculator would be too hard to figure out and I tried to find roundabout ways of getting the answers. Once I took time to learn how to use the financial calculator, I realized how much easier it made my life. If you're struggling with it, watch videos on YouTube or go talk to the TA's. The calculators seem far more intimidating than they actually are. Finally, really take in what you are learning. A lot of college classes have taught me to learn just enough to get through the semester and then forget the information. Everything learned in this class is meant to help you in your future decisions and if you really pay attention, you will be able to save money and invest wisely.

Budgeting in this class really put in my perspective on how much I spend. It was a shocker. I start a full time job soon so being able to budget for a 401(k), IRA, food, cars, etc. I'm now able to not just ballpark my expenses or just guess but now I have a pretty decent sense of what goes into a budget so I'm not surprised when certain (health insurance, car payments) pop up without a warning.
One other part I truly loved and that was my favorite part (that is related to budgeting) is taxes. UGH most would say but I think my favorite couple of pages were the tax strategies. Super cool and I can't wait to start trying them out. So future students: be sure to read that section carefully! I feel that if we each learn a general idea on how taxes are paid, we can save way more and be able to become greater financial stewards.

This class saved me years of financial mistakes that I would ultimately have felt the effects of throughout my whole life! I'm in my last semester and started my career a month ago. Up to this point, I've never created a budget because I've always made enough on my own, but I also haven't been saving. This class taught me how expensive life can really be and how to make it manageable with a budget and by saving. I now have a plan to be financially stable now and in the future as I start saving for retirement right now! If I hadn't learned this stuff, I would probably have put off saving for retirement for years and that would have seriously hurt my future retirement savings.
My advice to future students: Actually do the assignments! When creating the budget particularly, it can be easy to not take it seriously, but don't fall into that trap. These assignments are about so much more than just a grade, they teach you lessons you'll use for your whole life.

Unlike a lot of the classes I've taken throughout my undergraduate career, I am sure I'll actually use many of the things I learned in this class. I have gone into many tests of other classes where I memorize the content and brain dump it and walk out of the testing center with no need to remember anything. But I'm pretty sure in the relatively near future I'll be seeking a mortgage to buy a home, will need to buy a new used car for a growing family, and will need to know what to do to invest my money! That is one of my favorite aspects of this class. I feel like I understand how to do things that I was just never taught before!-- pretty important things. Then you won't be confused when you actually need to do certain things with finances! -- Like Jackie Chan

Ok, so one of the biggest things I see high school/college students complain about on social media is that there aren’t any classes that teach you “real life” skills like budgeting and how to buy a house. And I get so annoyed because THESE CLASSES EXIST!! You just need to get up off the couch and look for it! This class is an excellent example of a class that teaches you how to adult.

· You learn amazing budgeting, taxes, insurance, and home/car buying skills and more!

· The discussion boards are so helpful. It’s large groups of students helping students with examples, experiences, and advice. Plus the TAs are AWESOME and genuinely want to help.

· Make use of your textbook and workbook. They’re like the Holy Grail to the class.

· It’s useful information you’ll use every. Single. Day. After you finish the class. Of all the BYU classes you’ll take, this one best prepares you for the real life world.

· Take all of the information and advice you learn in this class, or you could end up like the metaphorical Anakin in the meme below.

Seriously I learned so much in this class and it is very valuable information. But if you rush through it just to get it done it won't be as interesting or beneficial to you. Also the financial calculator online is the biggest help in the class in my opinion it's free and you can use it whenever you want to figure something out on your own later. The rubrics that are posted really do have everything you need to do for the assignments so follow those to a T. If you have any questions talk to your TA because they are super helpful.

This class has been by far the most beneficial for me in the real world! I chose to take this class because I heard from others how great it was for college students/married couples. I learned how to do taxes, create a budget, invest, and so much more! Most classes I have taken at BYU I forget after about two weeks (@Humanities) but these topics are practical things that I WILL be using in the future. I feel much better prepared to financial support myself and my family because of SFL 260. Make sure you take the time and reflect what you're learning in your own life because it really will make your life easier and help you better prepare for the future!!

I will use pretty much everything I learned in this class in real life and will keep this text book to refer back to often. Before taking this class, managing money felt pretty intimidating to me and I did not understand a lot of things regarding finances and managing money. But now, after taking this class, I feel a lot more prepared to manage my money and this class broke complicated concepts down in a way that I could actually understand. You should definitely take this class to learn how to become a wise financial steward!

This was an answer to prayer because I learned so much about how to budget, invest, buy a home, etc. etc. If you are looking to become more knowledgable financially all around, this class is for you!!

I cannot count the number of times I have shared the things I have learned in this class with other people. YOU LEARN SO MUCH in this class and every single thing is 100% applicable to life. I seriously don't understand why it isn't a general. Take this class seriously and you will get so much out of it! Stay up on the deadlines, work on your final presentation throughout the semester (it will save you loads of time at the end), read the textbook (it is so interesting and so helpful), do the problems in the workbook (it isn't busy work), and take notes throughout the semester in a place that you can save forever (trust me, you are going to want them)! Don't be scared off by the math. Just follow the workbook step by step and you'll do great!
(My favorite movie: Confessions of a Shopaholic. "Now walk away. I was right!! This class is applicable to your personal life and so the more you connect it to yourself, the more you will get out of the class. TRUST me. I heard other people saying that, but it took me about a month to realize. ALSO take advantage of the extra credit opportunities, even if it's just adding a gif or meme to your weekly posts! I loved learning about budgeting because I did not realize how much I was overspending until I was forced to budget for this class.

I am now able to better understand my capabilities when it comes to managing my finances, something which I have always struggled with. I never knew I had it in me to properly budget my money and even plan for the future! The class system was perfect–I finished majority of the class online but I felt so connected to my professor and classmates. Everyone was so helpful and it was nice to see us helping each other out in bettering our money-management skills. Professor Chandler gives you so much opportunity not just for grades, but because she wants to push you to learn so that you can prepare for your future!

This class was heaven sent! BYU (and every University) needs to make this course part of general education. I honestly don't know how people will make it in the world without it. I thought I had a pretty good understanding of finances before, but I was so wrong. So naive. I now have so much confidence about my future financial decisions like my daily budget, buying a car, a house, my retirement plan. The course itself was fairly easy to follow. The math section can sneak up on you, but if you stay on top of doing the practice problems you'll be just fine. My suggestion for the final project is to make it as close to your real life situation as possible. I now have an in depth 5-10 life/financial plan! How cool is that!?

I now have the resources to make wise choices financially that will benefit my family. The three most useful things I learned about in this class were budgeting, filing taxes, and investing. I knew general things about these topics before taking the class, but learned so much more through assignments I can apply to my own life. I completely recommend this class because you will learn so many life lessons. Information is presented simply, but in great detail. The assignments are helpful to future situations.

This class requires a lot of discussion, which is so helpful, but can also be hard. Money can be a really difficult thing to talk. It can be uncomfortable to reflect on your experiences. It can be easy to make comparisons to other peoples financial status. If it feels hard, thats okay. Your feelings are valid and money can be scary. But know that everything about this class is designed to empower you. Take the advice to heart and take control of your financial situation. If you already have more debt than you would like don't beat yourself up, just make a plan on how you're going to pay it off. If you didn't grow up in a home with parents who made wise financial decisions now is a great time to make sure your kids have a different experience. You've got this. Don't be afraid to share your experience, learn from others and try new things.

The textbook is really well written, and none of the assignments are particularly difficult. I have also learned how to save myself a lot of money and be financially savvy now and when I have a family. This class teaches you many ways to prepare for the future by saving and investing money now while being a broke college student. I don't regret taking this class, but you will if you don't!

This class was so helpful for everything from taxes to how to save for a home and emergency fund. I love listening to Dave Ramsey and have tried to do what he says and this class follows so many of the same principles of wealth building. To the future students: don't forget the assignments on Saturdays. Either do them ahead of time or just don't get too wrapped up in other things that you just forget them altogether. The budget has to be one of the most invaluable tools this course teaches about for most college-age kids and you should take advantage of that portion of the course. My wife and I totally changed some of our spending habits just because of that one thing. If you know how to be smart with your money, you can be unstoppable. If you don't know where your money is going, that's where you start running into problems. Let this course teach you a thing or two and you shouldn't run into money problems. Otherwise Dave will have a thing or two to say to you.

This is a class that is not something to just "brush off" once you're done taking this class. This is a class that is very applicable to every day life and has information that can help improve and change your life throughout school and the rest of your life. This knowledge has allowed for me to have better financial stewardship and also to share what I have learned in this class with family and friends who have had questions that I was able to answer because of this class. Many classes that I take, I study really hard for while I am in the class then forget the second my last exam is over. This class is not one of those classes. This is a class that I will forever remember and look back on in order to improve how I handle my finances now and in the future. I have come out of this class with more knowledge that is more useful and applicable in my every day life than any other class I have taken so far.

I LOVED this class. I'm so grateful for the principles I learned and also for the very practical, hands-on projects we did. I wish I had known in the beginning how useful the TA's are. They are SO willing to help you understand more difficult concepts (especially the tax section- that one is a doozy). Since everything you learn in this class is necessary to be a successful adult, it would be best to understand every concept. I also love how centered it is on the spiritual side of things. When the spirit testifies of the truths of financial stewardship, you know this stuff must be pretty important to the Lord. This class will bless your life and your family's life until the day you die (or after you die, depending on how much you start investing now!). TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

A lot of people wonder if taking a family finance class is worth their time if they think they already know they how to manage money, or if they have a busy schedule. IT IS WORTH IT. There are always new tips and tricks to learn about how to manage money and finances wisely, and hearing from other students is a great tool. It is also a good way to experiment new techniques in money management if you think you know the basics. Don't rush through assignments or complete assignments just to get the grade, but actually take the time to learn the principles so you are able to apply them in your own life.

This is one of the most worthwhile classes offered at BYU. It doesn't matter what your major is, you WILL benefit from this class if you just do the assignments. They are to-the-point and definitely not busywork. Every assignment is applicable to your current financial situation and your future one (if you choose it as the family for your final project).
Also the material in this class isn't the type that you memorize for tests and then forget after the semester is over. This is real-life stuff that you will take with you everywhere!
I wish I would have know at the beginning of the semester that the final home slides and the final home presentation have the same rubric but they are graded totally separately! So if you put something in your slideshow but don't say it in your presentation then you'll lose points and vice versa. Be very comprehensive and thorough in both the presentation and the slides!
Great class!

I Learned How to Buy a Home

This class was extremely beneficial for me. The title of this post says it all. Probably the biggest thing that I am saving for with my wife is a home, and we are about five years out. To be honest, at the beginning of the semester I had no idea what would be required of us to purchase a home. I didn't know how loans worked, how a down payment worked, what PMI was, or how much we would need to save. Of course this class is beneficial for those who already understand stocks, or investments, or cars or things like that, but for someone like me who really had no idea how it was, it really changed my perception on what will be required of me and how the need to start preparing is NOW. I thought that the TA's were always willing to help out and answer questions, the emails which came in for the course were timely, and the discussion posts were helpful. Advice I would give for future students coming into this course would be to simply focus on one or two things that they would like to learn from the course. This class is so information heavy that if you try and learn everything you won't learn anything. If you focus on really learning one or two of the things, like how to buy a home, or how to purchase a car, or how to invest, then you will glean a lot more than if you just try to absorb everything all at once.

This class is an amazing opportunity to take the reins on your life! Take the time to prepare and put in effort to make it applicable to your own life. There were some weeks where I just last minute did the assignments, and it was much less valuable than the weeks when I thoughtfully took time to use my own life numbers and implement principles into my own life. It's a great idea to build your final presentation along the way rather than waiting until the end. The most important thing is, take time to understand the principles! I will hold onto this textbook and my slides for a long time so that I can draw back on them and be a wise steward!

I wish I had spent more time reading the textbook in order to really soak up and internalize the information. Listen to the tips and tricks that are provided in the various chapters because they WILL help you out, not only on assignments but in your everyday life. Something I will never forget is the counsel to change the oil in my car on time every time in order to extend the life of my car. I also realize the importance of a 15-year mortgage as opposed to a 30-year mortgage and how much money I'll avoid having to pay in interest if I choose the shorter term loan.

Focus on the apply and IRL assignments because they will teach you important things you need to know in the future. Don't treat this class as a joke, because you will learn so much necessary information to adult better if you pay attention.

Ok so I came into this class thinking that I already knew everything when it came to finances... BOY WAS I WRONG. kind of. I already had relatively good spending habits, I knew how to make smart purchases and live within my means, I knew which kind of financial investments were smart (insurance, investing, buying used cars, etc.). But when it came to buying a home I was pretty clueless. After we figured out the true costs of a home I felt even more relieved that I'd taken the class. This course is a good idea for anyone, and I appreciate all the things I learned. I will be honest: in my opinion, there were a few assignments that felt like busy work, and some of the online content was wordy/confusing. I'm definitely keeping the textbook though. It's amazing.

Professor Chandler is amazing! She is super real, and is very understanding. The finances look intimidating at first, but it really isn't as bad as it looks. The course project is super useful, my advice would be keep on adding to it weekly. Don't cram everything the last weekend. It would've been too much to do in such a short amount of time! But one of the advantages of doing an assignment early is the you can always change or make revisions as needed. Another advantage of doing your assignment early is that you can have the TA review your assignment before the due date and hope you can get the best score possible. One of the last advantages of doing your assignment early is that then you don't have to worry about it. You will be stress free and happy. Anyways this class has been awesome and I have learned so much from it. DO IT EARLY. Do not try to do it early, JUST DO IT EARLY. TRUST ME :)

Online Classes Are Not for Everyone!

The amount of skills you will acquire during the course of this class is overwhelming. You will be unbelievably prepared for basic, life skills in the financial realm! However, online courses are not for everyone. Yes, the flexibility it amazing, but you need to be committed to learning on your own and getting the work done on time. Organization is key! If you think you might struggle with that, take the class in person and enjoy the content and life skills with a learning atmosphere that plays to your strengths! Don't be confused by the meme, you CAN do well in this class! But just make sure you are up for the responsibility and organization necessary.

I have learned so much from this class. From improving the budget to learn how to purchase a car and house to learning how to make jokes about financing. One thing I have learned from this class is that completing an assignment early is one of the best things to do. Imma try to sell to ya. First reason, you will be happier, stress free and optimistic about the class. Second reason, just being able to have the TA help to help you revise as needed is a great way to get the best possible score. And Last reason is that some assignments take longer than others, So I you complete the assignment early you will feel accomplished. Just don't try to get it done early, GET THE ASSIGNMENT DONE EARLY. JUST DO IT.

I took this class because a friend of mine recommended it. I grew up with a dad who teaches finance at the collegiate level, and so I kinda thought I knew everything there was to know about family finances. However, this class opened my eyes to soooo many things I had NO idea about. Things that I would have never asked my dad about because I didn't even know about them in the first place. The entire course is designed to be applicable to your life and the situations you're going through, and it ties the gospel into every lesson. As a newly married person, I am so grateful that I took this class. I feel much more confident with budgeting, the process of buying a home, and our plan to stay out of debt. Honestly, if you take the time to really apply each assignment to your real-life situations, it'll help more than you know!

Family Finance - Fulfilling and Enriching

This has been one of the most impactful and life-enriching classes I have taken at BYU. I have wanted to give my full effort and time to many classes, but this was the first to allow me enough time in my schedule to do it. Plus, the combined reading, note taking, and assignment time was less time-consuming and much more fulfilling than a majority of the other classes I have taken. If you read every chapter AND take any sort of notes you will learn a lot. Plus, I thought that the workbook taught me real-life calculations that I actually wanted to know.
One final note is to take enough time to pick your first Family Scenario, Salary, Dream Home, and Modest Home carefully so that you can use all your Apply assignments for the final project without much additional work.
Good Luck!

This class has honestly prepared me so much for when I want to buy my future house. I had a mindset before taking this class that buying a house would be relatively easy and that my husband and I would be able to do it within the next 5 years. It was to my surprise that that wasn't really the case. Before taking this class, I wish I had known more about taxes and insurance. Those two things play such a big factor when purchasing a home. Thanks to this class, I feel a little more informed!

You know how you were in high school and you felt totally unprepared for the world. You were wondering why they were teaching you calculus (which you didn't care about then and have never used sense) instead of how to balance a checkbook or make a budget. Taxes were a foreign concept and you hoped your mom would do yours forever because if you had to do it one day, you'd be lost, etc. This is the class that does what your high school classes failed to teach you. This is the most important class you can possibly take for your future, for your life, for your worldly experience in general. I recommend 100000000% this class. Trust me and just do it!

This class has taught me so much about purchasing a home. I never knew it would be so complicated. My original thoughts were that home buying wouldn't be so complicated and that my husband and I would be able to do it in five years. Through this class I've learned that there are underlying features that one would need to take into account. This isn't just for home purchasing, but it's for all other financial aspects as well. I feel like I can stay true to my budget as well as how to start investing. I know the value of saving money for retirement. I wish I had known more about taxes and insurance before going into this course because learning those concepts were a little challenging for me, but it is so worth it once you find out how important they are!

My wife and I have been married for five months. This class has helped us budget and prepare for buying a home someday. I have learned so many things that we have been able to implement into our financial lives. Being money smart relieves a lot of stress and this class really helps you know how money works and how to use it properly. I wish I had known the benefits of this class coming into it. I think the class Family Finance can sound intimidating but it is so helpful and interesting. I would also suggest being very thorough in textbook reading. The textbook has a lot of amazing content that is tested- be sure to study it tremendously!
I would also suggest checking the class calendar at the beginning of the week because many times multiple assignments are due on one day and it is nice to get a jumpstart on them. I hope this helps! Enjoy this amazing class.

Make sure that you do everything you are asked and read all the chapters and you will learn a lot, have fun and get a good grade. This is is one of the few classes where you actually will use everything you learn in class which is sadly rare. This class teaches you how to prepare for the future.

I honestly didn't really know how big of a (negative) impact inflation can have on a lifetime of savings. This class helped me to understand both what inflation does, and how to prepare for it. I now understand why investing for the long term is so important, and that it doesn't have to be really complicated. Eventually, I would like to invest in stocks, but for now, I can start with something simple like a CD. It would have been useful to know this before this class because I could have been more aware of how my current spending habits were affecting my financial stability in the future- not that I can't still be financially stable in the future, I just might already have some money saved somewhere. I am glad I know now, so I can save and be safe from inflation when I am old and gray. :)

Honestly, this is the class that I needed my senior year of high school. This would have been so helpful the past 6 years as an adult, but I guess it's better to learn this stuff late than never. It was really helpful to learn about taxes and how that all works. To be honest, I still need to learn more about it. It was also really helpful to go through the whole process of how to purchase a home. I'm glad that now I know how to research all of that. I would recommend learning how to use the financial calculator software as soon as possible and take the time to really understand the math. I'm not great at math and I should've taken more time to get to know it more. I loved the online format and the TA's were great. Super helpful class that actually told me stuff. YOU GOT THIS

This class is super practical! Assignments are even labeled IRL (for In Real Life) because it not only teaches you finance principles, but it walks you through your own "personal" finances. I loved the tests because it was a blend of math, which were typically easy to understand story problems, and multiple choice from the textbook. So even if you're not a wizard with math, you can crush the textbook part to make up for it and balance it out.
