Taking time to listen to the struggles and trauma that students bring with them is extremely important to building relationships and connections. To acknowledge the history of how students of color, varying ability, and backgrounds are treated are key to this reflection. 

Dr. Betina Love explores and guides this discussion in her book "We Want to Do More Than Survive," as an area of critical focus when beginning the abolitionist teaching lifestyle (2019).
