•	What is Sociology to you? You can answer this question intentionally wrong, or correctly, or give us a wild guess if you have no idea yet. You can choose to answer only one or all three of these options, though make sure to indicate which kind of response (wrong, right, guess) you are providing.

After doing research to create a formal definition and to further educate myself on what sociology is, I learned that sociology is the study of social life, social change and social causes and consequences of human behaviour (Ntbase, 2024), which was very similar to my ‘wild guess’ answer I provided. As a sociologist, you observe the structure of groups of people, how they are being organized and how people within these groups are interacting with one another (Ntbase, 2024).

I would say that I know that Sociology reflects on the social aspect of someone; such as their opinions, beliefs, values and what shapes these (culture, religion, education, generation). To me sociology is very individualized, yet also can be categorized by those shapers.

It looks into how social structures and culture can shape a person’s actions and interactions. The focus areas when studying sociology can be a mix of race, gender, social class, family, religion, education, crime and social movements. This can be important because it gives us insight how society can influence a person, how inequality’s can be made and more.

From what my memory can recollect, Sociology is the study of human interaction. Whether if it is about 1 person, or multiple people, sociologists tend to study the way how others think by creating some sort of analysis. Sociologists are also very important since the term itself is so broad to the point they can be associated with almost anything. (i forgot if groupthink was a term for this course or not)

It examines how people interact with one another and how those interactions are shaped by larger social structures like institutions, cultures, norms, and values. Sociologists study topics such as inequality, education, family, crime, religion, and government to understand how society is organized and how it influences individuals’ lives. A key idea in sociology is that personal experiences are often connected to wider social forces, meaning that things we think of as “personal choices” are often shaped by society.

Sociology is the study of society, social interactions, social behaviours and shared beliefs, values and norms between a group of individuals. I also think in sociology topics that are studied include social inequality, aspects of institutions, economies, race, gender and sexuality, feminism, the patriarchy and influences/interactions within social communities. I think these influences and interactions can have internal and external aspects in regard to them. Finally, I think sociology studies individual social interactions as well as collective/group social interactions.

It focuses on how algorithms send secret signals through phones that influence people’s thoughts, emotions, and daily decisions. Sociologists in this area study how likes and views are actually part of a global system that assigns people their personality traits. For example, people with more followers are considered genetically more sociable, while people with fewer followers are classified as introverted by technology systems. Sociology also studies how Wi-Fi signals create invisible social groups that only exist online. -Evelyn Placencia Caicedo

It is this great distance in time between us and these fallen stars that allow for us to reflect on ourselves; our rights, our wrongs, our own collapsed selves.

According to my completely real field study during my Katy Perry-esque travels into space, I have slowly begun to unravel a new society living above us that shares a strong passion for things just like us. Individuals have a choice in which situations they choose to interact and thus, behaving in a way that is deemed acceptable by mirroring those in that same group, because they want to be included. Or, they are given a certain set of rules to follow and they must abide by those rules to ensure appropriate behaviour.

My major is Psychology, so my wild guess on sociology is that it’s the study of people and behaviour, and how we interact within society. I think it focuses a lot on social constructs and looks deeper into underlying issues, like how minority groups (different races, genders, etc.) experience the world. It probably also examines why certain cultures or groups think and behave in specific ways while others don’t.

I’m guessing concepts like deviance are important too. In psychology, we learn about the four D’s, and deviance is one of them. Basically, when someone goes against society’s norms. But that makes me wonder: why do some cultures see certain behaviours as acceptable while others don’t? Who decides what is “good” or “bad”? I feel like sociology tries to answer these kinds of questions and explain these differences. - Daphne

Sociology puts life under a microscope and focuses on both the ugly and beautiful (Plummer, 2021).

I think sociology is the study of humans and the way we interact with each other on a day-to-day basis. I think it looks at why people act the way they do and why some individuals can be so easily influenced by others. Especially now, we live in such a trend-based society among Gen Z, where trends come and go so quickly, and the overconsumption of items we do not really need has become common. I believe sociology can help us understand why people fall into these patterns and what the catalyst behind this increase in society is.

- Ezinwa Nwakoby

To me, Sociology examines how individuals influence society and how society, in return, influences individuals. It explores the hidden patterns behind everyday life, such as friendships, family roles, social media trends, crime, education, culture, inequality, and even the way we speak or dress. Sociology helps explain why groups behave differently, why some communities face challenges while others thrive, and how power and identity shape opportunities. I find it fascinating as it links individual experiences to broader societal systems. A sociological viewpoint prompts individuals to challenge beliefs instead of taking things as "normal." In essence, sociology offers a perspective that uncovers the unseen regulations and frameworks that shape human behavior, relationships, and social transformation across societies and eras.

Sociology is the study of social life, one’s behavior, and social changes that occur within communities and their consequences. It looks at how human norms, culture, and identity shape individuals in a certain way, which determines how they interact with one another in society. Furthermore, social connections and networking are crucial elements of sociology since they encourage personal development and mutual support, which helps in the creation of stronger and more equal communities.

-Janvi Patel

To me, sociology is the study of how people interact with each other and the society around them. It looks at how our experiences are shaped by things like family, culture, education, and the communities we live in. Sociology helps us understand that many issues are connected to larger social patterns rather than being purely personal problems. For example, if someone is struggling to find affordable housing, sociology would encourage us to look beyond the individual and consider factors such as housing costs and economic inequality. It also examines how social norms and values change over time. In conclusion, personally sociology helps us better understand both human behavior and the world we live in.

This is just a theory of mine, but I think sociology is about uncovering the hidden influences that shape human behavior and society. Every generation tends to believe its way of living is normal, yet history shows that what is considered normal is constantly changing. Things like beauty standards, gender roles, and ideas of success are often shaped by the society we live in rather than being universal truths. Sociology seems to ask why large groups of people adopt the same beliefs, follow the same trends, or accept certain inequalities without questioning them. It explores how culture, media, and institutions for example, influence the choices we think we are making independently. Rather than simply studying people, sociology seems to study the unseen forces that shape how we understand ourselves and the world around us.
