To be honest, I cannot agree with the statement that in the future computers will replace teachers. To start with, a computer is an inanimate machine. It is deprived of human emotions, which are very important in the communication between a teacher and children. Moreover, only a teacher is able to provide psychological assistance especially for their students. In my opinion, it is necessary for children to understand all the new information with some analogi

I find Vygotsky's view that learning is a social and interactive process more compelling than Skinner's idea of habit formation. While Skinner's focus on rewards and punishments effectively explains how we develop simple habits, Vygotsky's theory better accounts for the complexity of human learning, which is deeply rooted in collaboration, language, and culture. For example, a teacher using a Vygotsky approach wouldn't just give a student a good grade for a correct answer; they would guide the student through a difficult problem with questions and hints, encouraging them to discuss their ideas with peers. In this way, knowledge is not just passively received but actively built through dialogue and shared experience.

“Students are not only objects of assessment, but subjects who can monitor and direct their own learning.” – Black & Wiliam (1998)

«Оқушылар тек бағалау объектісі емес, өз оқуын бақылап, басқаруға қабілетті субъект.» – Black & Wiliam (1998)

1. What is academic writing?

In my view, academic writing is a way of expressing ideas in a clear and organized manner, usually for learning or research purposes. It is not about using complicated words, but about showing knowledge with evidence and logical structure. I think of it as a process where a student explains what they understand, connects it to reliable sources, and presents it in a formal style.

2. Why is it important?

I believe academic writing is important because it teaches us how to think critically. When I write academically, I cannot just share my opinion; I have to support it with reasons and examples. This makes me look deeper into the topic, compare different viewpoints, and then build my own argument. It also helps in communication, because when writing is clear and well-structured, teachers and other readers can follow my thinking easily. In the future, these skills are useful not only in studies but also in professional life.

3. What is one principle you will always remember?

One principle I will always remember is that clarity is more important than complexity. Sometimes students try to use very difficult words, but the real goal is to make the idea understandable and convincing. If my writing is clear, then it shows I have really understood the subject. For me, this principle connects directly with critical thinking, because clear writing proves clear thinking.

First question:

What is academic writing?
-Academic writing is a formal style of expression used in universities and scholarly settings. It focuses on presenting ideas clearly, logically, and objectively. Unlike casual writing, it avoids slang and personal bias, instead relying on evidence, critical thinking, and structured arguments to explain or support a topic.

Second question:

Why is academic writing important?

In my view academic writing is important because academic writing helps students and researchers communicate knowledge in a professional and reliable way. Through this type of writing, ideas can be shared, analyzed, and built upon by others. Moreover, it teaches students how to think critically, organize their thoughts, and develop arguments based on facts rather than opinions.

Third question:

What is one principle you will always remember?

The most important rule I want to follow is the importance of using evidence. In academic writing, every argument should be supported by reliable sources, such as books, articles, or research studies. This not only makes the work more convincing but also shows that the writer respects academic honesty and avoids personal bias.

Әлижан Сара

1. What is academic writing?

Academic writing is a formal style of writing used in universities, colleges, and schools. It is different from everyday writing because it follows specific rules and has a serious tone. Academic writing is organized, clear, and objective. It usually avoids slang, contractions, and strong personal opinions. Instead, it uses evidence, facts, examples, and logical arguments to support ideas. Another important feature is the use of formal vocabulary and correct grammar. Academic writing also often requires proper citation and referencing, which means giving credit to the authors and sources we use. This makes the text more reliable and shows that the writer respects the work of other researchers.

2. Why is it important?

Academic writing is important because it helps students, teachers, and researchers share their ideas in a professional and structured way. It makes communication clear and understandable for different people, even if they are from different countries or cultures. Through academic writing, we learn to express our thoughts logically and systematically. It also teaches us how to think critically, analyze different opinions, and compare information from various sources. These skills are very useful not only for studying at university but also for our future careers. In many jobs, people need to write reports, projects, or research papers, so academic writing helps us prepare for real-life tasks. In addition, good academic writing builds trust and credibility, because it is based on facts and research, not just personal emotions or guesses.

3. What is one principle you will always remember?

One principle I will always remember is to be clear and organized in my writing. When I write an academic text, I should structure it with an introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction explains the topic and gives the reader an idea of what the paper is about. The body develops the main arguments and provides evidence or examples to support them. The conclusion summarizes the key points and shows the overall message of the text. This structure makes the writing easy to follow and helps the reader understand my main idea. I will also remember the importance of supporting my arguments with strong evidence, such as facts, statistics, or references to reliable sources. This makes the text more convincing and professional. Finally, I should always proofread my work to check for mistakes in grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation, because accuracy is a key part of academic writing.

In my opinion, academic writing is a special way of writing used in schools and universities. It is different from daily speaking. Academic writing should be clear and easy to understand. It uses correct grammar and spelling. It is more serious than normal writing, and it does not use slang words. I think academic writing is important because it helps students explain their ideas in a good way.

For example

Everyday writing: “I think school is cool, cuz I like my friends.”

Academic writing: “School is important because it helps students learn knowledge and develop social skills.”

2.Why is it important?

I think academic writing is important because it helps students share their ideas clearly. I believe that writing should not confuse the reader. When I write, I should use short sentences and easy words so that everyone can understand my ideas. If my writing is too difficult, people may not follow my meaning. Clear writing also shows respect to the reader, because it makes their reading easier. For me, this principle is very important, and I want to use it in all my school work and future writing.

1. What is academic writing?

Academic writing is a formal and disciplined style of expression that is mainly used in education and research. It includes tasks such as essays, reports, research papers, and dissertations. This form of writing is characterized by clarity, logical structure, objectivity, and evidence-based arguments. For example, when writing an essay on climate change, we do not simply say “the weather is getting worse,” but we provide scientific data and references to support the claim.

2. Why is it important?

Academic writing is important because it demonstrates our critical thinking skills, allows us to communicate knowledge effectively, and helps make our ideas credible and persuasive. It also ensures that our work can be understood and respected by other students, teachers, and researchers. For instance, a well-structured research report can influence future studies, while a poorly written one may cause misunderstanding or lack of trust.

3. What is one principle you will always remember?

One principle I will always remember is clarity. A strong argument loses its power if the writing is confusing or difficult to follow. Clarity ensures that readers can grasp the main point without struggling. For example, instead of writing a long and complicated sentence like “Due to the multifaceted environmental circumstances that are currently affecting our planet, it is increasingly difficult for humans to sustain their habitual lifestyle,” we can write more clearly: “Environmental problems make it harder for people to maintain their usual way of life.”

It is characterized by evidence-based arguments, a clear and logical structure, a precise and objective tone, and the consistent citation of sources.

Why is it important?

Academic writing is important because it is the primary mechanism for building and sharing knowledge. It allows researchers to present their findings for critique and validation, enables students to demonstrate their understanding and analytical skills, and creates a permanent record of intellectual progress that others can learn from and build upon.

What is one principle you will always remember?

I will always remember the principle of "Writing for your reader." This means never assuming the reader knows what I am thinking.

Academic writing is an academic style of communication used in education and research. Its main features are clarity, logical structure, and the use of reliable sources. For example, if a student writes about global warming, they cannot only share personal feelings; they must use information from books, articles, or scientific research. In my opinion, academic writing means expressing knowledge in a clear, accurate, and objective way. The purpose is not just to write but to share ideas responsibly and help others understand them.

⸻

2. Why is it important?

Academic writing is important because it builds trust and creates a system of shared knowledge. It allows students, teachers, and researchers to check and develop ideas together. For example, in history, when scholars write about ancient civilizations, other experts can compare and discuss those ideas. This process helps education grow and protects people from false information. For me, knowledge is the light of the mind, and academic writing is the tool that spreads this light to others.

⸻

3. What is one principle you will always remember?

The principle I will always remember is to support my ideas with evidence and logic. In my opinion, academic writing becomes strong only when opinions are explained with facts. For example, it is weak to say “exercise is good,” but it becomes stronger when you explain how it improves health and prevents disease. This principle makes writing clear and trustworthy. For me, it also shows respect for readers and helps me succeed in study and research.

Computers are useful for learning and can help students practise grammar, vocabulary, and listening. However, real teachers understand students’ feelings, explain difficult ideas in different ways, and give personal support. A computer cannot motivate students or manage a classroom like a teacher can. I would like to use a computer for extra practice, but I still prefer learning with a teacher. The best way is to use both – technology and teachers together.

One key principle is using the target language as much as possible in the classroom. Another is promoting active participation through speaking and listening activities.

I think, both Skinner (1957) and Vygotsky (1978) made significant contributions to the field of foreign language teaching. In my view, their ideas complement each other, and the most effective approach would be to combine both depending on learners’ age. For adult learners, I would lean more toward Skinner’s (1957) theory by encouraging habit formation through repetition and practice. However, for younger learners, I would follow Vygotsky’s (1978) approach by using play-based activities to create a social and interactive learning environment where language develops naturally through communication.

1️⃣ What comes to your mind when you hear the term “summative assessment”?

When I hear the term summative assessment, I immediately think about the final stage of learning where students demonstrate what they have achieved after a specific period of study. It’s like a summary of all their knowledge and skills gathered throughout the course. For example, final exams, end-of-term projects, or standardized tests are all forms of summative assessment. It helps to evaluate not only students’ understanding but also the effectiveness of the teaching process. In my opinion, it’s the moment that shows both the students’ hard work and the teacher’s effort during the entire learning journey.

2️⃣ How is it different from formative assessment?

Summative and formative assessments serve different purposes. Formative assessment is an ongoing process that happens during learning — it’s more about giving feedback and supporting improvement. It helps students understand their weaknesses and grow step by step. On the other hand, summative assessment happens at the end of a learning stage and focuses on measuring achievement. While formative assessment is “for learning,” summative assessment is “of learning.” The key difference is that formative aims to improve learning, while summative aims to evaluate it.

3️⃣ Why is summative assessment important for both teachers and students?

Summative assessment is crucial for both teachers and students because it provides a clear picture of learning outcomes. For students, it helps them understand their academic progress and recognize their strengths and areas for improvement. It also motivates them to take responsibility for their learning and set higher goals. For teachers, summative assessment offers valuable data about how effective their teaching strategies were. It helps them reflect, improve their methods, and ensure their lessons meet curriculum objectives. Overall, summative assessment acts as a mirror — showing the real results of teaching and learning efforts.

I don’t think that computers will completely substitute teachers in the future. Computers and technology can help students learn many things faster and more easily, but teachers play a very important role. They support students emotionally, explain difficult topics in different ways, and motivate them. A computer cannot fully replace human interaction and understanding.

As for me, I wouldn’t like to have only a computer as a teacher. I think it would be useful as an additional tool, for example, for practicing or watching lessons. However, I still prefer real teachers because they can communicate, answer questions directly, and make lessons more interesting.

The primary goals of teaching foreign languages in today’s globalized world go far beyond just grammar and vocabulary. They focus on preparing learners to communicate, connect, and succeed internationally. Here are the key goals:

1. Communication Skills

The main aim is to help students communicate effectively in real-life situations—speaking, listening, reading, and writing with people from different countries.

2. Intercultural Competence

Students learn to understand and respect different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. This reduces misunderstandings and promotes tolerance.

3. Global Opportunities

Knowing foreign languages opens doors to international education, careers, travel, and business. It increases competitiveness in the global job market.

4. Cognitive Development

Language learning improves memory, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking. It also enhances overall academic performance.

5. Access to Information

Students can access knowledge, media, and research from different parts of the world, not limited to their native language.

6. Personal Growth

Learning a new language builds confidence, independence, and curiosity about the world.

7. Lifelong Learning Skills

It encourages adaptability and continuous learning—important skills in a rapidly changing, global society.

I am Robo, your new friend.” Max jumped back in surprise but couldn’t hide his excitement. “A… a robot friend? Really?” he asked. Robo nodded and said, “Yes! I can play games, help with homework, and even tell stories.” Max grinned and decided to test it. “Can you make my breakfast?” he asked. With a whirl and a beep, Robo rolled toward the kitchen, ready to help. Max realized that his mornings were never going to be boring again.

I agree more with Vygotsky, who says that learning is social and interactive. I think students learn better when they work together and help each other. Communication makes learning more interesting and effective.

For example, in the classroom, students can work in pairs or groups to solve a problem or complete a task. One student may explain something, and others can learn from it. Also, the teacher can guide students and support them when needed. This shows that learning happens through interaction.

However, Skinner’s idea about habit formation is also important, because practice helps students remember things better.

1. What comes to your mind when you hear the term “summative assessment”?

Summative assessment is a final evaluation of students’ learning at the end of a unit, course, or term (for example, exams or final projects).

2. How is it different from formative assessment?

Summative assessment measures what students have learned at the end, while formative assessment is ongoing and helps improve learning during the process (like quizzes, feedback, class activities).

3. Why is summative assessment important for both teachers and students?

It is important because it shows the overall progress and achievement of students. Teachers can evaluate the effectiveness of their teaching, and students can understand their level of knowledge and identify their strengths and weaknesses.
