In Malaysia, a key limitation regarding road damage from potholes is the issue of limited funding allocated for road maintenance, particularly for state roads, which often leads to delayed repairs and inadequate preventative measures, causing potholes to persist and worsen over time; further complicated by factors like heavy traffic, weather conditions, and overloaded vehicles contributing to the problem.

Other limitations include:

Complex legal framework:

While citizens can potentially sue the government for pothole-related damages, the Public Authorities Protection Act often makes it difficult to successfully claim compensation due to its "exclusion clause" which protects the government from liability in many cases related to public duties.

Inefficient reporting system:

Although reporting mechanisms exist, complaints about potholes may not always be addressed promptly or effectively, leading to delays in repairs.

Poor infrastructure inspection:

Regular and comprehensive inspections of roads to identify potential damage can be lacking, leading to potholes developing before they are detected and repaired.

Lack of public awareness:

Not everyone is aware of proper reporting channels or the potential dangers of potholes, potentially delaying necessary repairs.

Seasonal factors:

Heavy rainfall can exacerbate the issue of potholes by causing water to seep into cracks in the road surface, leading to further deterioration.

Proper compaction is a solution for overcoming occurrence of potholes

Compaction is probably the greatest determining factor in pavement performance when it comes to asphalt installation. Proper compaction allows asphalt to achieve the density and strength required to support the pavement’s anticipated traffic load and helps prevent various forms of damage that can significantly diminish pavement lifespan.

The Process for Asphalt Compaction

There are three main steps of the asphalt compaction process. An experienced asphalt pavement company understands all of the skills and tools needed to handle asphalt compaction from beginning to end.

Here are the three phases of the process:

Paver Screed Step: Using the paver screen, the asphalt becomes stronger and has increased load-carrying capabilities.

Roller Compaction Step: Roller compaction is a major part of the process. One or more roller compactors are used to increase pavement density.

Traffic Compaction Step: Lastly, compaction occurs over time by on-road vehicles. Traffic levels also determine the asphalt compaction installation process. Roads and highways will get more traffic compaction than lesser-used areas.
