This portrait of Kalpana Datta was published in her 1947 book, Chittagong Armoury Raiders: Reminiscences. In it, she recalls her involvement with the armed independence movement in India. This photograph shows her in 1932, at the age of 19. At the time the photograph was taken she was in hiding from the Indian Imperial Police. In 1930 she had taken part in the Chittagong Armoury Raid, an incident in which a group of revolutionaries set out to destroy a stock of ammunition, ordnance and military infrastructure in the name of the Indian Republican Army, an armed resistance group fighting against British rule. Datta evaded capture for several years, but was eventually found and arrested in 1933. She was sentenced to life imprisonment, but was released in 1939. She then joined the Communist Party of India and continued to be politically active. She died in 1995 at the age of 82 in Kolkata.
