Playing 'the Alibi" game with breakout rooms

This game is perfect for breakout rooms, and it's even easier to organize and monitor than in a physical classroom.

If you haven't played this game before with your classes, the idea is to break the class into two groups of 'suspects' and 'police'.

The suspects first have to talk to each other alone to develop an alibi for where they were when a crime occurred, and the police have to talk to each other to come up with a series of questions to try to catch the suspects in a lie.

Then the suspects are divided and the police interrogators are divided to interview the suspects separately.

Finally, the class is brought back together and the results of the interviews are presented to the whole class as reported speech, and a determination is made as to whether the suspects were lying or telling the truth.

It's great fun and a good way to practice question formation, reported speech, and the differences between ''ask', say', and 'tell'.

Wordwall can be a great way to make classes more dynamic - you can create your own activities or use others that have been published.

Here's one I did for practising verb patterns. Students have to decide which form comes after the verb and then talk about the subject.
Great for "guided" fluency.

Note down information that students share with you and use it to do a True/False quiz using the polling function at a later date.

With B1 students ( and higher levels), use TED TALKS to :
- teach vocabulary ( depending on their interests & needs);

- practise learning strategies & skills ( for some TED talks, there is a comprehension quiz. Alternatively, the teacher can prepare 4-5 questions to check understanding)

- set up debates/ diasussions on any interesting/ controversial ideas from the video

I use this website to "cure" grammar issues with students. You can just search for the problem and incorporate the exercises into your lesson. Answers are on the last page, great for telephone, virtual and F2F. If you want to incorporate it into material for a booklet, you can just screenshot the area you need. I find it quite useful, hopefully others will as well!

Lateral Thinking riddles to practice yes/no question formation

These riddles can be used as practice for yes/no question formation and as an icebreaker to start off a class.

Tell the students you are going to present them with a situation and their task is to discover what happened by asking yes or no questions, and only ask yes/no questions.

Some of these riddles on this webpage are better than others; after using them a few times, you will find your favorites. I recommend using uncomplicated stories at first, but even the "easy" ones are surprisingly difficult at times. Don't be afraid to guide the questions and/or give hints to help the students along.
