Jan Karski said, "the tragedy was that these testimonies were not believed. Not because of ill will, but simply because the facts were beyond the human imagination." What is "imagination"? How is the term used in this reading? What is the role of imagination in responding to atrocities like the Holocaust? What is the role of imagination in shaping an individual's universe of obligation? (6 points)

Imagination was what people were used to believing was real life or basing the facts off of their life. And since there was no first hand accounts or news relating to the ghettos during that time, no one would be able to see what was really going on and if someone were to tell them they probably wouldn't believe it since it was such an atrocity. The term "imagination" was used in this reading to describe the beliefs that other people in other nations had on the state of Germany and the Jewish population. The role of imagination in responding to atrocities like the Holocaust is one that helped to describe how people of other nations saw the event and what they believed was actually going on. The role of imagination in shaping an individual's universe of obligation is one that was used to describe how someone believed who they had the most responsibility to and who were people they could really care less about.

Rob Smart
