I find the last sentence of the story interesting when it says "When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease - of joy that kills." (Chopin 151). The words "joy that kills" leaves me to understand that she had so much joy for her husband's death that when she found that he was okay, the sudden mood change from something so positive to something so negative had actually killed her. Her hatred for her husband killed her.

The bird is an important part of the story. It marks the moment that it is realized that Mrs. Wright had killed her own husband. In a jokingly cheesy sense, Iron & Wine's song "Flightless Bird, American Mouth" reminds me of the bird in the story. The bird is dead, therefore it is flightless.

In "Brownies," an African-American group of girl scouts encounter, what Arnetta believes to be, a white group of girl scouts that gave them a racial slur. They soon realize the girls have what is called Echolalia which makes them repeat things they've heard. The story provides the lesson that what you see usually has something deeper behind it. This illusion symbolizes that by showing an ugly woman, but also a pretty one.
