In my reading center, I expect for children to get cozy and use the materials to make a connection with the story and the real world. The materials in the center and basket include: a blanket, teapot, ABC letter's, "My Very First Winnie the Pooh - A,B,C With Pooh" book, Pooh bear, and a character's toy keychain.

Retelling a story is a great way to develop language and reading because it uses previous knowledge to make room for new knowledge. Toddlers will likely review the basic alphabet letters and find them again in this book. This connection that they get from past experiences will strengthen their knowledge base and awareness of print.

Print in the Classroom

In the classroom I visited, unfortunately it didn't have as much print as I expected. However, with the print that was found, I understood why the staff members wanted to keep it this way. Children have the most focus and peace in environments that are not overly decorated. The print that they used was verse's (like the picture shown), material labels (with a real picture and text), and center descriptions.

Not only do the staff want to promote a more breathable environment, but with the verses, add a factor of encouragement and important messages that children can learn early on to carry with them throughout their life!
