Essential Question: Why do we feel the need to belong?

We feel the need to belong because you get a sense of validation and you can connect your feelings with other people when part of a group. When you are excluded from a group, it hurts because you feel isolated which can cause depression and anxiety because of the lack of communication between people. You feel as if you are not good enough because you do not have the ability to relate or connect with others and feel as happy as you could be with other people. For example, in Prisoner B-3087 the Nazis are ruling over the Jews and the main character, Yanek and his family have been sent to different concentration camps. Later, he learns that all his family members are killed and he needs to learn to survive by himself. He feels a sense of loneliness in the concentration camps. After the war was over, the Jews were freed and Yanek found out that he still had some family left. He finally felt a sense of belonging, “I had a family - a cousin still. Family. I wasn’t alone” (Gratz 254).

In order to survive, you had to work and do as told, survive through all the obstacles. Yanek experienced this, one day the Nazi's made the Jews work so hard to see who was still "strong" enough. Yanek worked so hard but felt like collapsing, but in order to move on the Nazi's would pick the strongest people to work and kill all the weak ones. After working a whole day and moving bricks, he forced himself up and showed the Nazis and they said "'He can work" (Gratz 202).
<sub>
Yanek made a projector to entertain his family, “It was a slide projector I’d made by mounting a lightbulb on a piece of wood and positioning wooden plates with lenses from magnifying glasses in front of it” (Gratz 4). This shows how Yanek is such a smart young boy. He shows his intelligence throughout the book as he uses his brain to survive till the end.
