Shiloh is the first book in a three part series written by Phyllis Naylor. It was published in 1991and went on to win The Newberry Medal in 1992. On a walk one morning, 11 year old Marty Preston crosses paths with a beagle dog who is very clearly being abused. Naturally, Marty gains an attachment to the dog and wishes to protect him from his owner – the infamous Judd Travers. The story unfolds as Marty tries to figure out a way to rightfully purchase Shiloh from his abusive owner. Along the way, Shiloh escapes and finds himself seeking refuge at the Preston household. Marty must then make the decision of whether to keep this a secret or to return Shiloh to Judd. Complications arise and Marty learns that nothing is ever as simple as we wish it to be. Throughout the story the theme of moral dilemma – telling right from wrong – is very apparent. It becomes clear to readers that right and wrong is not always black and white but rather sometimes the distinction between the two becomes blurred. Marty knows that it is right for him to protect Shiloh from harm yet at the same time it is wrong for him to lie to his family and friends about what he is doing.

A 2001 best-selling children’s novel, Everything on a Waffle is a 2002 Newberry Honor Book. Primrose is an 11 year old girl whose parents are believed to have allegedly died in a typhoon –but Primrose simply does not believe it. In the wake of all this she is being bounced back andforth between different homes and different caretakers which seem to be taking a toll on hermental health. The only place she finds sanctuary is at a restaurant by the name of “The Girl on the Swing” where every item on the menu comes served on a waffle. Horvath tells the story of a girl struggling to hold out hope while everyone around her is urging her to accept her parents' supposed death. The idea of hope becomes a central theme of the story. While Primrose always stood firm in her beliefs, those around her believed her to be foolish for holding on to something they thought was gone. The story stirs up the question of when to let go of something vs. when to keep holding onto hope. The struggles of adoption and different family dynamics also make an appearance as an important theme to the story.
