What is Apartheid?

Apartheid is a policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race. In South Africa the government established a policy that regulated relations between the white minority and the non-white majority, discriminating the non-whites. This was legally established in 1948, when the National Party (the all white government) gained power, although racist actions, like segregation, were still being practiced prior to that time. Their goal was not only to separate South Africa’s white minority from its non-white majority, but also to separate non-whites from each other, and to divide black South Africans along tribal lines in order to decrease their political power.

During the early years of his life Nelson Mandela already had a strong influence of leadership around him. His father, Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa, served as chief in a South African village. After his father's death he was adopted by a royal family where he was able to attend the only Western- style higher learning school in the area. During his attendance he was sent home for boycotting the university's policies. Later he went to the University of Witwatersrand where he became involved in a racial discrimination movement and developed key relations with black and white activists.

Some believe that he died in prison, which is not where he died, and some believe that it was from a respiratory infection and he passed away inside his home. The truth is he died inside his home in Johannesburg on December 3, 2013.
-Mandela has very well known quotes for people to remember him by such as....
-"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
-"It always seems impossible until it's done"

Nelson Mandela is a known anti-apartheid activist. Mandela believed in not only equality, but acceptance of others. He wanted the world to be tolerant of one another and respectful of culture and beliefs. He himself was a Christian, although we do not know what specific type, and he believed in democracy. He lived out these views and used them to help others during the apartheid. He stood up for what he believed in, even if it meant he had to put himself at risk.

Standard of Living During the Apartheid

For so many the Apartheid was a brutal and sad time in their lives. Many were hurt emotionally and physically. I have read a few articles about different people's perspectives during this time and so many people were affected in so many different ways. Michelle Faul was just a little girl during the apartheid. She shares her story and states that "My experience was more the absurd pettiness of apartheid, rather than the brutal, state-sponsored violence used to maintain it." On the other hand, many were faced with the brutality and suffering that the apartheid brought. "Ellen Moshweu was just trying to go to church. A police officer shot her in the back on that November day in 1990." "David Mabeka was at home in 1986, sleeping through a newly declared South African government state of emergency, when police burst in to his home and took him away." These are just a couple glimpses that we get of the absurd mistreatment that the native Africans got.

Leadership in Prison

Nelson Mandela became a member of the Youth League inside the African National Congress, South Africa's main black party. It was then banned by the government following the apartheid.
Mandela was sent to prison for his non-violent opposition against the segregation, representing the ANC. While he was in prison, he showed leadership by sacrificing his own life for his beliefs. He wrote an autobiography called long walk to freedom to share the stories of his life and the cruel oppression that he encountered. Overtime, the world started to show interest in his story and voiced their own opinion on the apartheid. One of the three strategic decisions Mandela made could have given him an early release, but he wanted to stay true to himself and chose his principles over freedom. This was another way his leadership stood out among all others.

Leadership to encourage the power of forgiveness

Nelson Mandela focused on spreading the will to forgive but to not forget. He encouraged people to look toward the future rather than being stuck in the past. He set examples by promoting a rugby team who symbolized racism and paid a visit to the widow whose husband was the very reason why Mandela went to prison. He teaches people to make amends with others who may have done him wrong. Such leadership of forgiveness without holding grudges is something powerful that all role models should have.

Staying true to his principles lead him being released from prison while also becoming the president of the ANC and then of South Africa. Another one of his strategic decisions was to run for only one term and make people know from his speech that he will represent everyone, despite their color. Instead of having the country easily fall back into civil war his goal was to unify the country democratically. Nelson's main goal is to represent human rights equally throughout his principles of freedom and justice to help end the apartheid.
