Methamphetamine, also known as meth, is a highly addictive and illegal drug. This is a crystalline white, odorless powder that comes in small packaging or as a pill. There have been other colors which are not as common, but still used. Meth is classified as a stimulant (a substance that increases alertness and energy). Illegally, there's a pill named "ya ba", and over the years, that name has become vague to any type of meth pill. However, meth is most commonly snorted, but it can also be injected (most dangerous because other materials can get dissolved into the water as well), smoked or orally. Legally, a white pill containing 5 mg of meth can be consumed if there's a prescription. Methamphetamine is a man-made chemical made in secret laboratories. Strong substances are used to make this in order to increase its strength: amphetamine (stimulant drug) or other strong chemicals, common cold or pain reliever pills are used as a base, and is mixed with battery acid, drain cleaner, lantern fuel, and antifreeze. People who consume these are not only in danger, but also the people who make it and are around it while it's being made because some of the ingredients are explosive.
“What Is Methamphetamine?

Crystal meth is a form of meth and is used by all ages. However, it's most commonly used in night clubs and parties as a "club drug." It's highly addictive even after trying it for the first time. Compared to meth, crystal meth comes in bigger crystal chunks and is more commonly smoked rather than snorted.
“What Is Methamphetamine? What Is Crystal Meth?

Consuming meth result in euphoria for a short period of time (lasts about 12 hours). There's a rush or high as well as happiness and excitement, alertness, and physical activity. This is just like the effects of a stimulant since they both are meant to increase alertness and excitement. Because the "high" from the drug both starts and fades quickly, people often take repeated doses in a "binge and crash" pattern. In some cases, people take methamphetamine in a form of binging known as a "run," giving up food and sleep while continuing to take the drug every few hours for up to several days. Injecting and smoking give a sort of "high" that snorting and swallowing doesn't.
Adams, Jill U., and Tish Davidson.

What meth does to the brain...
Meth stops the brain from trying to stop consuming the drug. According to Dr. Nora D. Volkow's, her research shows that meth addicts do not respond to any stimuli except more meth. When she researched on abusers who had stopped consuming the drug for nine months, she found that they recovered substantially from the damage done to the dopamine (nuerochemical in the brain that allows movement and emotions), but not from the damage of memory.
What meth does to the body...
Injecting is harmful because when meth is being dissolved in water, other materials can dissolve too. If two or more people are sharing the same needle, they are at risk of getting HIVs or Hepatitis A. Just like stimulants, meth can raise blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature. Consuming meth creates a cycle that contains seven stages: 1) the rush - initial response when injecting or smoking the drug. When he/she feels the rush, their heart rate, blood pressure, and pulse increase rapidly. 2) the high - become argumentative and focus on unimportant things. 3) the binge - since the high doesn't last that long, people start to take more and more meth and this lasts about 3 to 15 days. During this time, people become hyperactive. 4) tweaking - happens during the end of the binge when you can't feel the rush or high anymore. You become mentally unstable because you are craving for more. 5) the crash - body shuts down meaning you can't handle anymore drug effects. This stage lasts about 3 days. 6) meth hangover - after the crash, the abuser is exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally. This stage lasts 2 to 14 days. This leads to enforced addiction, as the “solution” to these feelings is to take more meth. 7) withdrawal - the abuser realizes usually after 3o to 90 days after their last day of meth that they are in withdrawal. First, he becomes depressed, loses his energy and the ability to experience pleasure. Then the craving for more methamphetamine hits, and the abuser often becomes suicidal. Since meth withdrawal is extremely painful and difficult, most abusers revert; thus, 93% of those in traditional treatment return to abusing methamphetamine.
“What Does Using Crystal Meth Make You Feel Like? - Drug-Free World.” Foundation for a Drug-Free World, Foundation for a Drug-Free World, www.drugfreeworld.org/drugfacts/crystalmeth/the-stages-of-the-meth-experience.html.
"Methamphetamine." UXL Encyclopedia of Drugs and Addictive Substances, edited by Barbara C.

Meth is used to treat certain diseases such as the symptoms of ADHD and narcolepsy. It can also treat obesity for short period of time. Meth is a schedule II drug - drugs can be classified as one of five schedules (one being the most abusive and five being the least abusive) - which means a prescription is needed for medical use. Distributing meth without medical approval is illegal and the offender can spend ten years in jail and will have to pay a $10,000 fine.
"Methamphetamine." UXL Encyclopedia of Drugs and Addictive Substances, edited by Barbara C.

In 1893, a Japanese chemist synthesized methamphetamine from another stimulant. This drug was first used to treat obesity, asthma, and narcolepsy; armies and allies used this in World War II to help troops stay awake. Scientists first developed amphetamine-like substances such as meth as an alternative to Ephedra Plant - a shrub that has been used in many traditional Chinese medicines. In 1885, another Japanese chemist named Nagai Nagayoshi found that a part of this shrub can act as a stimulant in meth. However, it wasn't until 1919 that the drug became easier to produce when Japanese chemist Akira Ogata used phosphorus and iodine to reduce the plant levels and make it more crystallized.
History.com Staff. “History of Meth.” History.com, A&E Television Networks, 2017, www.history.com/topics/history-of-meth.
