When Jonas reads his instructions for his assignment from his folder, it states that "You may lie." In other words, since Jonas has the special job of being The Receiver of Memory, he is allowed to lie because of the circumstances of his assignment. The author is trying to make us see that Jonas will be conflicted with a lot of emotions and pain when he receives memories, memories that the community is not allowed to know about except for him. He is allowed to lie because no one except for him and the Giver is allowed to know his true thoughts. This quote moves the story forward by showing the reader and Jonas the rules of his assignment and it also makes us wonder, what exactly is Jonas's assignment about?

He said: "See you in the morning, Recreation Director!" He and Asher have been friends since they were very young. This quote states and shows that they are starting to seperate and they are distancing slowly. Jonas, with his job as the Reciver, and future Giver, has to keep his traing a complete secret and return home right after training. The author shows us that sometimes in life, people drift apart as life goes on.
-Alison (803)

The author is trying to make us see that in this world, lying is not a normal thing to do and how the community wants everyone to always be honest and to not break any rules, and expect everyone to be very obedient. This quote moves the story forward by showing us how now that Jonas has been rewarded job as receiver, he is permitted to lie which makes the story more interesting since no one else can.

When Jonas is reading his instructions for his job a while after the ceremony, his instructions say “ You may lie.”(65) In other words, Jonas’s instructions are enabling him to start lying. The author is trying to make us see that Jonas is growing and observing that his society is not what he thinks it is and that his whole life might be a lie. Jonas is also receiving lots of power in his new job. Also, the setting is taking place in a society that might be slightly corrupt. This leads to the theme that you cannot enjoy life without pain and making a change. This quote moves the story forward by showing us that Jonas has things to figure out about his society he may have never questioned and must go through pain to figure that out, leading the story to its tipping point and keeping it going forward.

When Jonas is looking at his folders for the rules of his assignments one of the rules says "You may lie". In other words is saying he now can break one of the biggest rules of the community. The author is trying to show us that now Jonas is given a massive advantage against everyone else, and that Jonas status gives him a lot of power that others don't have. And this moves the story forward because it gives suspension if Jonas will use his power for selfish needs or do what will benefit everyone and be honest.

When Jonas gets his assignment, his personal paper shows a list of instruction, that says “You may lie.” The purpose of this is that it gives Jonas power, because he doesn’t have to tell the truth anymore. Jonas reads this the night after the ceremony, when they are first allowed to view their folder. This quote makes Jonas question because when they’re born, they are told never to lie, and this erases what they said. To me, this quote means that their society maybe isn't as perfect as it looks. This changed how I thought about all the characters. When the time came to open the folder, the paper within says, “You may lie.” In other words, Jonas is able to do something no one else are able to do and that is a rule in their society. The author is trying to make us see that even though the society seems perfect, it has many flaws and unjust. This quote ,oves the story forward by showing us others are more privileged than the other and Jonas is more special than he thought since he got this message.

In other words, this gives Jonas the choice of lying, as before if he were to lie, he would have been chastised and punished. Now he can lie without any consequence. The author is trying to make us see here that Jonas has been given new freedom, and that he is now allowed to lie and break rules that he wasn’t allowed to break before, Jonas could do anything with this new freedom. This quote moves the story forward by showing us that Jonas now has a little bit of freedom, and he could do anything with that. He could lie to anyone about anything.
