As can be said for many things, drug use is on a continuum. Some people are able to use drugs recreationally without becoming addicted or without the drug use affecting their lives and relationships. Other people are not able to do so.

Too much of anything can cause problems. Often, drugs are used as part of social functions and they can be difficult to avoid. For some, a drink or two at a party is enough while others regularly black out and have to be carried home. It is surprising to me that even now, knowing how much violence and injury can come from alcohol use, alcohol companies are able to advertise as widely as they do unlike cigarette companies who have limited means of advertising.

"...how society defines drug abuse determines how society responds to drug abuse."

I do believe that the moral compass of society dictates what we will and will not allow and who we will and will not allow to do any given thing. For example, if poor people or people of color smoke crack it is an issue but if middle-class, white college students snort cocaine they are just having fun. Similarly, minorities have been disproportionately imprisoned for crimes related to the possession and distribution of marijuana for decades, but now, white people have learned how to profit from the drug and it is on track to become legal.
