Feedback reflection from Casey Teacher

I enjoyed reading about the different forms of feedback we can give to change the mindset of ‘this is wrong, oh well,’ to ‘now what can I do next to improve my learning?’ I liked how one of the most important starting points is gaining the trust of your students. If they don’t believe that the teacher knows what he/she is talking about or doesn’t have the students’ best interests at heart, students are unlikely to invest the time and effort to take the feedback seriously. Also, the most effective feedback is that which is productive. This makes me think that when we give feedback, we must also give time for the feedback to be understood and used. There aren’t many kids that will go home and actually put the feedback into action without knowing how to actually use it.

This year, I’ve tried not writing final grades on tests or quizzes, but instead just circling incorrect responses. I also give time in class for reflection, corrections, and questions so that my students know I value mistakes and encourage them to learn from them. By this point, there is less ‘pressure’ when taking a quiz or test because they know that they will have the chance to make corrections, with a little bit of self-efficacy sprinkled in. By circling, I’m not pointing them in any certain direction, but keeping it open ended since there are multiple ways to usually solve a math problem. This strategy definitely isn’t perfect, but I’ve noticed a positive difference from how I used to grade in the past.
