 "All that money wasted on another crazy space trip when so many people here on earth can’t afford water, food, or shelter." 

This quote shows how the lack of morality of the government, where they rather spend the in space mission than invest the money in make their environment healthy again. Instead of giving hope outside home, which is hostile and uncertain, it also connects to immigration where you do not really know if you going to be safe, happy, or accepted. I think these juxtaposed the real integrity and moral of people in high charges.

This quote creates a brutal impression in the reader of how the neighborhood that Lauren has to pass by is like.

The adjectives used such as "filthy", "trashed" and "druggies" expos the poverty poverty that these people of lower class are experiencing and the effect of it ("druggies") 
Moreover it shows the   filth and squalor of the world outside the walled neighborhood in 2014(unsafe and dirty, but it is one that Lauren will have to venture into someday.)
