Sophie's grandmother expresses culture in many different ways, she believes that Sophie is not behaving the way a Chinese girl should behave. The narrator expresses the values that Chinese girls have like being obedient to their parents which is something that Sophie does not do.

In this short story there is an argument about the culture of the Chinese and the way that the Irish people do their things and live their lives as compared to the way the Chinese live their lives.

In this story language is portrayed in many different ways, the figures of speech used and how they are explained. "you have done me a good deed and one day I shall return the favour of your kindness" this quote portrays irony because though the elephant promised to return the favour to the man it did not it instead showed the man how cruel it can be by taking the man's hat while the man sat on the rain with no protection'

When the man set fire in his hut to burn both the lords and the hut he imagined tragedy he had set for the lords of the jungle, though he was trying to protect himself he imagined the animals screaming and asking for help while they were all stuck in the fire, how his efforts of building that hut went down the drain.

HOW I WILL TEACH LANGUAGE IN MY S.A CLASSROOM
I will allow my learners to work in groups, discuss and explain difficult concepts to one another. I will act as a true role-model to them by treating them as capable learners with unique abilities. In this short story gender is portrayed in a very simple yet understandable manner. Sisipho who is Masondo's nine months pregnant wife is being showed to us in the first 4 pages a loving wife, has motherly love and cannot wait to have her child which is how women are expected to be by the society and also be submissive to her husband. She supports her husband and still has the love she had from when they met which is something very rare in this century. People nowadays "run out of love" for each other, probably how the society portrays love to them now.

Masondo is being showed to be a support, the "head" of the house and the provider, how the society paint men to be, "a man has to be the provider, the protector and be the most respected". Masondo is well respected at work by the nurses and the co-workers, well respected at home by his wife. 

HOW I WILL TEACH GENDER IN MY S.A CLASSROOM
I would teach my learners that as boys and girls they are very different, physically and emotionally. We are no longer living in the "olden" days so they should know that they are allowed to express themselves in any way they feel like doing without fear of being judged. I would tell my boy learners that it is okay to show emotions, it is okay to cry because we are all humans.
